MCL769 METAL FORMIMG ANALYSIS

PROBLEM SHEET

1. A blank of 150mm diameter is to be cut from a large isotropic sheet of thickness 1.5
mm. If the ultimate tensile strength of the material is 300MPa, determine the force required
for shearing. If this blank is deep drawn into a cylindrical cup using a draw ratio 2.3, what
is the inside diameter of the cup? If the efficiency of the process is 90%, what is the largest
blank diameter that can be drawn?

2. A cylindrical cup with an inside radius 30mm and height of 80mm is to be drawn from
a blank of thickness 3 mm. If the uni-axial yield stress and UTS of the material are 200
MPa and 360 MPa, determine
a) the initial blank size
b) the draw ratio and the % reduction
c) required blank holding force
d) total drawing force required. Assuming coefft. of friction as 0.1.

3. A 1.5mm thick sheet, grid marked with 5mm diameter circles, is stretched in biaxial
tension. The two principal engineering strains on the surface at a point are 0.7 and 0.3
respectively. What is the thickness of the sheet at this point after stretching?

4. Find the tool radius necessary to produce a final bend radius of 100 mm in a part made
from a steel sheet of thickness 1.5mm? Assume uniaxial yield stress as 310 MPa.
Determine the spring back ratio. E=200 GPa and =0.3.

5. If a sheet specimen of width 80mm and thickness 6mm is bent on a die through the
minimum possible radius, what will be the radius of curvature after the load is released?
Tensile properties of the material are YS = 250 MPa; E = 70GPa; ν = 0.3; Elongation=30%.
Calculate the % of elastic core and show the stress distribution through the thickness of the
specimen before and after springback (ignore strain hardening).

6. A piece of sheet metal of thickness 3mm and width 500mm is to be bent through an angle
90° with minimum bend radius possible. The available dies are: a V-die (k=1.33) with die-
opening width of 50mm and a wiping die (k=0.33). Material data is YS = 120 MPa, UTS
= 200MPa, Elongation= 20%. If the available press capacity is 10 tons, which of these dies
can be used with a factor of safety of 2.0?
