1 Derive an appropriate Kremer expression to determine number of plates for multi stage counter 14 MI
absorption column considering both absorption and stripping factor. |CO1|

Derive an expression to calculate height of the continuous differential contact packed column 14 M)
considering individual and overall mass transfer coefficients for both liquid and gas phase
controlling. Also derive the simplified expressions for number of transfer units. [co1]

Awaste air stream containing 2 mol %impurity Ais purified to 0.02 mol 9% by scrubbing with 14 MI
pure water in a counter current packed column. The column provides 7 overallgas phase
transfer units inaheight of 1.75m. The equilibrium mole fraction of Ain the vapor and liquid
are related according to:

(b) In a drying process the time taken to dry a wet solid from 50% moisture content to the critical |2 MI
moisture content 15% is6 hours. Calculate the time required to dry the solid to 10% moisture
content, under the same drying conditions (Equilibrium moisture content of the solid: 5%.)

5. (a) Derive an expression to determine the time taken for drying using constant rate period and |2 M]
falling rate period. (CO2)
(b) Sheet material 0.5 cm thick containing 800 kg of dry stock/m³ of original wet stock is to be
dried at constant drying condition. The initialdrying rate is 4 kg/hr. m² at the initial moisture
content of 33%. The fnal drying rate is 1 kg/hr. m² at 6% final moisture content. The
equilibrium moisture content is negligible. If drying is from the two large surfaces only, and
ifthe drying rate in the failing rate period is proportional to the free moisture content, calculate
the total drying time. A!ll moisture contents are on the dry basis. [CO3]

6. (a) Explain terms raffinate, extract, selectivity and distribution coefficient. JCO2 |2 M)
(b) In asingle batch extraction, the conditions were maintained to reduce the concentration of
pyridine in 500 kg of aqueous solution from 20 wt.% to 5 wt.% using chloro- benzene as
solvent. Equilibrium compositions (end points of the tie line) in terms of weight percent of
pyridine-water-chlorobenzene are (5, 95, 0) and (I1, 0, 89). Estimate the amount of pure 12 MI
solvent required in kg for the operation. (CO3|

(b) In a single stage extraction process, 10 kg of pure solvent S (containing no solute A) is mixed (2 MÊ
with 30 kg of feed F containing A at a mass fraction XF = 0.2. The mixture splits into an
extract phase Eand a raffinate phase R, containing Aat Xe =0.5 and XR =0.05 respectively.

(1). A gaseous feed of pure A (| mol/liter) enters in a tubular reactor (2 liters) and reacts as
follows:

place in a plug flow reactor. If we replace plug flow reactor by a back mixed reactor of 2.5 times
volume of that plug flow reactor, then find the conversion of A. [CO1.C02]
(4). Atpresent conversion of 86 % for clementary liquid reaction A ’ 2R when
operating in an isothermal plug, flow reactor with a recycle ratio of 1. What will be the
conversion if the recycle ratio is i ncreased to 2. [CO1,C02]
