5. (a) Derive an expression to determine the time taken for drying using constant rate period and |2 M]
falling rate period. (CO2)
(b) Sheet material 0.5 cm thick containing 800 kg of dry stock/m³ of original wet stock is to be
dried at constant drying condition. The initialdrying rate is 4 kg/hr. m² at the initial moisture
content of 33%. The fnal drying rate is 1 kg/hr. m² at 6% final moisture content. The
equilibrium moisture content is negligible. If drying is from the two large surfaces only, and
ifthe drying rate in the failing rate period is proportional to the free moisture content, calculate
the total drying time. A!ll moisture contents are on the dry basis. [CO3]
6. (a) Explain terms raffinate, extract, selectivity and distribution coefficient. JCO2 |2 M)
(b) In asingle batch extraction, the conditions were maintained to reduce the concentration of
pyridine in 500 kg of aqueous solution from 20 wt.% to 5 wt.% using chloro- benzene as
solvent. Equilibrium compositions (end points of the tie line) in terms of weight percent of
pyridine-water-chlorobenzene are (5, 95, 0) and (I1, 0, 89). Estimate the amount of pure 12 MI
solvent required in kg for the operation. (CO3|
7. ka) Describe the mixture rule on triangular coordinate system. |CO2] 2 M]
(b) In a single stage extraction process, 10 kg of pure solvent S (containing no solute A) is mixed (2 MÊ
with 30 kg of feed F containing A at a mass fraction XF = 0.2. The mixture splits into an
extract phase Eand a raffinate phase R, containing Aat Xe =0.5 and XR =0.05 respectively.
The total mass of the extract phase is (in kg) |CO3]

(1). A gaseous feed of pure A (| mol/liter) enters in a tubular reactor (2 liters) and reacts as
follows:
mol
2A R, -TA =0.05C? liter.sec
Find what feed rate (liter/min) will give an outlet concentration CA = 0.36 mol/liter [CO2]
(2). An aqucous rcactant stream (5 mol A/liter) passes through a mixed flow reactor followed by
a plug flow reactor. Find the concentration at the exit of the plug flow reactorif in the mixed
flow reactor CA =4 mol/liter. The reaction is second-order with respect to A, and the volume of
the plug flow unit is doubie of the mixed flowunit. [CO2]
(3). Aliquidphasc homogeneous clementary rcaction 2A ’B with 40% conversion of Atakes
place in a plug flow reactor. If we replace plug flow reactor by a back mixed reactor of 2.5 times
volume of that plug flow reactor, then find the conversion of A. [CO1.C02]
(4). Atpresent conversion of 86 % for clementary liquid reaction A ’ 2R when
operating in an isothermal plug, flow reactor with a recycle ratio of 1. What will be the
conversion if the recycle ratio is i ncreased to 2. [CO1,C02]
(5). An aqueous reactant A decon poses at 80 °Cas follows:
of XA =0.70. [CO2]
(b) Describes the operating conditions in which a recycle rector acts like a mixed flow
reactor and when it can be assumed as a plug flow reactor? [CO2)
(7). (a) Explain the term "Selectivity" and "Yield" with suitable examples of parallel reactions.
(b) Describe spac etime and holding time with suitable examples. In which condition
space time and holding time are cqual. [Co1]
