Mechanics: Tutorial 1

1. An object of mass M is held in place by an applied force F and pulley system

as shown is figure. Assume that the pulleys are massless and frictionless.
i. Draw a free body diagram for each object in the system.
ii. Find the tensions in each section of the rope which is massless.
iii. Determine the magnitude of F.

2. A 4 kg block is put on top of a 5 kg block. To cause the top block to slip on

the bottom one, while the bottom one is held fixed, a horizontal force of at
least 12 N must be applied to the top block. The assembly of blocks is placed
on a horizontal, frictionless table. Assume that horizontal force F is now applied to the lower
block. Find
i. magnitude of the maximum force F so that the blocks will move together,
ii. the resulting acceleration of the blocks at the above maximum force.

3. Initially the system of objects, shown in the figure, is held motionless, and all surfaces, wheels,
and pulley are frictionless. Assume that m2 can move only vertically. At the instant after the
system of objects is released, find
i. the tension in the string,
ii. the acceleration of m2,
iii. the acceleration of M,
iv. the acceleration of m1.
What horizontal force must be applied to the cart M in the figure
in order that the blocks remain stationary relative to the cart?

4. (a) A person who normally weighs 60 kg stands on a bathroom scale in an elevator and observes
the scale to read 65 kg.
i. What is the acceleration of the elevator?
ii. Is the elevator ascending or descending?
(b) A 70 kg person rides an elevator that is accelerating upward at a rate of 4 m s-2.
i. What is the resultant force acting on the person?
ii. What force does the floor of the elevator exert on the person?
iii. What force does the person exert on the floor?
iv. If the elevator with its occupants weighs 820 kg and is supported
by a vertical cable, what is the tension in the cable when the
elevator accelerates upward at a rate of 4 m s-2?

5. A bag of cement of weight Fg hangs from three wires as shown. Two of

the wires make angles and with the horizontal. If the system is in
equilibrium, show that the tension is
( )
( )
6. On earth a block has a weight of 88 N. This block is sliding on a horizontal surface on the moon,
where the acceleration due to gravity is 1.60 m s-2. The block is being pulled by a horizontal
rope in which the tension is 24 N. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the
surface is 0.20.
i. Determine the acceleration of the block.
ii. If the same tension is applied to get the same acceleration on earth, what would be the
coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the surface?

7. A block of mass m = 2.0 kg is released from rest at h = 0.5 m

above the surface of a table, at the top of an incline ( ).
The incline is frictionless and fixed on a table of 2.0 m heigh.
i. Determine the acceleration of the block as it slides down
the incline.
ii. What is the speed of the block as it leaves the incline?
iii. How far from the table will the block hit the floor?
iv. How much time has elapsed for the motion of the block?
v. Does the mass of the block affect any of the preceding
calculations?

8. The mass m1 = 3 kg slides on a frictionless surface inclined at an angle α

with the horizontal. If P = 50 N, the mass m2 = 2 kg has an upward
acceleration of 2.5 m s-2. Calculate the angle α if the pulley has negligible
mass and friction.

9. Consider the system shown in figure. Suppose the masses m1 = m2 = 5.0 kg, and m3 = 10 kg.
The pulleys are massless and frictionless.
i. Show that the accelerations are related by
.
ii. Determine the acceleration of each mass.
iii. Estimate the tension in each string.

10. (a) The mass of a robot is 5450 kg. This robot weighs 3620 N
more on planet A than it does on planet B. Both planets have
the same radius of 1.33 × 107 m. What is the difference (mA – mB) in the masses of those
planets?

(b) At a distance H above the surface of a planet, the true weight of a remote probe is one
percent less than its true weight on the surface. If the radius of the planet is R, find the ratio
H/R.

11. An object of mass m1 on a frictionless horizontal table is connected

to an object of mass m2 through a very light pulley P1 and a light
fixed pulley P2 as shown in the figure. Let and be the
accelerations of m1 and m2 respectively.
i. What is the relation between these accelerations?
ii. Find the tensions in the strings.
iii. Express the accelerations in terms of the masses.
