January 2018 Semester End Make Up Examinations

Course: ENGINEERING MECHANICS Duration: 3 hrs

Course Code: 14CV1ICENM Max Marks: 100
Date: 12.01.2018
Instructions: 1. Answer FIVE full questions. Question no.1 is compulsory and
any 4 questions from the remaining 5 questions.
2. Assume any missing data suitably and mention the same clearly
1 a) State and explain the basic idealization in mechanics 4x5=20
b) State and prove Parallel axes theorem
c) Briefly explain the concept of belt friction
d) State and explain the principle of work energy
e) State and explain D’Alembert’s principle
2 a) State and prove Varignon’s theorem 04
b) A disabled car is pulled by means of two ropes as shown in the figure 1. If the 09
resultant of the two forces exerted by the ropes is 800N force parallel to the axis
of the car find:
(i) The tension in each of the ropes knowing that α = 30o ,
(ii) The value of α such that the tension in the rope 2 is minimum.

Figure 1
c) Sand bags are piled on the beam as shown in figure 2. Each bag is 1m wide and 07
weighs 100N. Find the resultant and its location.

3 a) For the dam section shown in the figure 3, find the resultant and comment on the 12
stability of the dam. The distance to 80KN load and 120 KN load from the
vertical face OB is 0.9 m and 2 m respectively.Take DE=EF.

b) A beam AF 6.3m long (AB= 3m, BE= 1m, EC=0.5m, CD=0.8m, and DF=1m) is 08
loaded as shown in the figure 4. It is supported at A and has a simple support of
0.8m length between C and D. Assuming a uniformly distributed reaction
between C and D, find the support reactions.

4 a) A 500N cabinet is mounted on wheels which can be locked to prevent their 08

rotation. The coefficient of static friction at all contact points is 0.30. The center
to center distance between the wheels is 1.2m. Assuming that the wheels at both
A and B are locked.
(i) Calculate the force P required to move the cabinet to the right.
(ii) For the value of P calculated, find the height ‘h’ if the cabinet is not to tip
over.
Refer figure 5(a) and figure 5(b)

b) Find the forces in all the members of the truss shown in figure 6. Please note B is 12
midpoint of AC and D is midpoint of EC.

5 a) Locate the centriod of the plane area shown in figure 7. All dimensions are in 12
mm.

Figure 7

b) Determine the moment of inertia of the shaded area about the axis A-A for the 08
plane area shown in figure 8.

6 a) A bullet of mass 20 gms moving at 300 m/s pierces a 3cm thick metal plate and 10
emerges with a velocity of 200 m/s. Determine the average resistance of the plate.
Also determine the minimum number of such plates each of 3cm thickness to be
placed together to stop the bullet. Assume the same frictional force to be acting.
Use work-energy principle.
b) A cricket ball is hit by a batsman at a height of 1.8 m above the ground. The ball 10
is caught by the fielder near the boundary at a height of 1m above the ground
exactly after 5 seconds. If the ball is hit with a velocity of 90 Kmph, find the
angle at which the ball is to be hit by the batsman. Find also the distance between
the batsman and the fielder.
