Ans: Abacus was the first mechanical device developed in China. It was used for calculations. It
was made up of a wooden frame with rods, each having beads. The frame is divided into two
parts—Heaven and Earth. Each rod in Heaven has two beads and each rod in Earth has five
beads. It was used for addition, subtraction,multiplication, and division.
2. Write about Pascal’s Adding Machine.
Ans : In 1642, Blaise Pascal, a French mathematician, invented the adding machine called
Pascaline or Pascal’s Calculator. It used gears, wheels and dials. Numbers were displayed by
rotating the wheels. It was capable of performing addition and subtraction.A taximeter is a perfect
example of a mechanical calculator.

3.Which was the first general purpose electronic digital computer & who invented it ?
Ans: Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC), the first general-purpose electronic
digital computer. It was invented by John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert in 1946.

4. State any one difference between second and third - generation computers.
Ans: Following are the differences between Second Generation Computers and Third Generation
Computers:
•Transistors were used in the second generation of computers, while integrated
circuits (ICs) were used in the third generation.
• In the second generation, punch cards and paper tapes were used as input devices, and output
was presented through the printouts. Whereas, in third generation computers, keyboard was used as
an input device, and monitors and printers were used as the output devices.

5. Write the full form of EDVAC and its inventor.


Ans: Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer (EDVAC) and it is developed by John von
Neumann.

6. Define UNIVAC I.
Ans: Universal Automatic Computer I (UNIVAC I) was the world's first commercially available
computer, designed by J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly in 1951. It was the first computer to
handle both numeric and text data. It was also the first computer that was equipped with a magnetic
tape unit and used the buffer memory.

Ans: Some of its most striking features are as follows:

from the position of the cursor and checks the complete document.
