1. Suppose that the number of screws produced by a sophisticated machine per day has a
poisson distribution with mean 2.What is the probability that out of total production
Of the day, there is (i) no defective screw (ii) exactly two defective screws (iii)at least
Sol 1.
Given: lamda=2
Aim: To find the probability that out of total production of the day ,there is (i) no defective screw (ii)
exactly two defective screws (iii)at least one defective screw (iv)at most two defective screws.
Calculation:
Conclusion:
2. The assumed adoption in an area is 60%.To verify the fact ,it is decided to investigate 10 randomly
selected couples. The investigation is repeated by 500 investigators. The number of adopter couples in
each set and the number of investigators are shown below ,Fit a binomial distribution.

3..In a month there are 125 births in hospital A,of which 55 are affected by jaundice ,while in
two consecutive months the proportion of jaundice -affected babies among total of 260 babies
is 0.35.Is there any significant difference in the proportions of jaundice -affected babies in
two months.
Sol 3.
Aim: To check whether there is any significant difference in the proportions of jaundice -
affected babies in two months.
Hypothesis:
Null Hypothesis: There is no significant difference in the proportions of jaundice -affected
babies in two months.
Alternative Hypothesis: There is a significant difference in the proportions of jaundice -
affected babies in two months.
Calculations:
Conclusion:
Since, p=0.1114 lies between the confidence interval=(-0.0205,0.2005), we accept the null
hypothesis and conclude that there is no significant difference in the proportions of jaundice -
affected babies in two months.
4.A hotel manager is concerned with increasing the return rate for hotel guests. One aspect of first
impressions by guests relates to the time it takes to deliver the guest’s luggage to the room after
check –in to the hotel .A random sample of 20 deliveries on a particular day were selected in Wing A
and Wing B of the hotel. Determine whether there is a difference in the mean delivery time in the
two wings of the hotel.
Sol 4.
Aim: To check whether there is a difference in the mean delivery time in the two wings of the
hotel.
Hypothesis:
Null hypothesis: There is no significant difference in the mean delivery time in the two wings of
the hotel.
Alternative Hypothesis: There is a significant difference in the mean delivery time in the two
wings of the hotel.
Calculations:
Conclusion:
Since, p(0.0000075) is less than the level of significance(0.05) we reject the null hypothesis
and conclude that there is a significant difference in the mean delivery time in the two wings of
the hotel.

)
(i) Find the correlation coefficient between competence and performance and interpret.
Sol 6.
Aim: To find the correlation between competence and performance and interpret and to find the
regression lines.
Calculations:
Conclusion: (i) The correlation between competence and performance is 0.3401. Therefore, the
correlation between the two variables is weak.
(ii) The regression line of x on y is- x = 21.68 + 0.28y and the regression line of y on x is-
y = 25.537 + 0.413x
7. Two independent groups of 14 children were tested to find how many digits could repeat from
memory after hearing them . The results are as follows:
A 288 286 258 266 248 257 244 259 262 250 271
B 310 286 307 328 366 391 317 326 377 397 314
Is the difference between mean scores of the two groups significant?
Sol 7.
Aim:
To check whether there is any significant difference between mean scores of the two groups
Hypothesis:
Null Hypothesis: There is no significant difference between mean scores of the two groups.
Alterative Hypothesis: There is a significant difference between mean scores of the two groups.
Calculations:
Conclusion:
Since, p(0.0000048) < Level of significance(0.05), we reject the null hypothesis and conclude that
there is a significant difference between mean scores of the two groups.
