Master’s in Public Health Nutrition

Reasons for Interest in Public Health

Health care is a critical element of society. Every person wants to live healthily, and this

requires professional input from a battery of healthcare workers, such as public health

professionals. Public health is a rapidly growing domain of general health care. Many students

are increasingly developing an interest in public health. This is due to the critical importance of

the course in promoting health, preventing serious diseases such as cancer and empowering

people to manage conditions. Scientific findings, healthcare awareness and new health policies

can positively affect millions globally. A unique blend of scientific studies, inquiry and action

creates public health. This discipline brings together people from various perspectives,

backgrounds and disciplines to discover health problems and their root causes. The stakeholders

can then use the information to develop innovative and long-term solutions that improve the

quality of life in the community.

While medicine discipline aims to treat injuries and health care conditions, public health

aims at proactively preventing these injuries from happening and thus keeping the community

healthy. By doing this, public health professionals can discover and share health interventions to

ensure health currently and in future. As a public health professional, I will have a professional

foundation and critical skills to understand cancer-related issues, one of the healthcare conditions

that has continued undermining public health.

Public Health Nutrition is a critical course in health care. Berkeley School of Public

Health offers a 2-year 4+1 MPH and one-year MPH. The course is fulltime and students must

complete at least forty-eight coursework units over one semester and four academic semesters.

They must also complete PHN required courses and school wide required courses. Every student

taking MPH must complete a public health practicum for a minimum of three months. The

internship sites are chose from different research institutions and public health organizations

based on the organizational needs and professional development.

By studying public health masters in nutrition, I will acquire critical knowledge on

managing cancer and other malignancies. This is because nutrition plays critical in the

management of cancer. Cancer patients must know the proper nutrients during and after cancer

treatment. Sometimes cancer and treatments cause side effects that may affect nutrition. Having

adequate knowledge of nutrition and its relation to cancer will enable me to enhance the

healthcare profile of cancer patients.

As a public health dietician, my main focus will be using nutritional factors to prevent

cancer. World Health Organization estimates that a third to half of the cancer cases can be

prevented by implementing the 2012 American Cancer Society (ACS) Guidelines for Cancer

Prevention guidelines. These guidelines have a strong connection between diet adherence and

decreased cancer incidents and mortalities. By completing a master's degree in public health, I

will have more knowledge about the guidelines and how to implement them and improve cancer

therapy.

It is impossible to talk about a master's degree in nutrition without considering the UC

Berkeley School of Public Health. This institution has an excellent reputation in its field of

study. The course will train me as a future leader in food and nutrition research, practice as well

as policy to identify current and future public health nutrition challenges and their remedies. The

institution has programmed the course so well that students can gain the necessary skills in

scientific understanding of issues in public health nutrition. With this knowledge, I will be able

to contribute positively to the creation of healthy food systems identification and advocacy of

good food policies. This will be critical in the planning and implementation of health

improvement programs. The course will offer public health skills on food systems,

epidemiology, nutrition policy and overall critical thinking skills.

I have qualifications for the program since I have a bachelor's degree that includes

coursework in physiology, biochemistry, human biology, and food and nutrition sciences. These

courses will be critical in my graduate work as a public health dietician. I understand the

importance of communication and public health dietician. In this regard, I have excellent skills in

both written and oral communication. My experience in public health nutrition also poizes me in

an excellent position for the program. I have two years of volunteer experience in public health

nutrition, an experience that has dramatically strengthened my academic experience.

Reasons for Pursuing this Degree Now

Studying this course at this time will have a lot of convenience for me because I do not

have many commitments. In this regard, I can attend the full-time MPH program as the

institution requires. Completing at least forty-eight units of the program over the coursework and

summer will not be an issue. I will be in a great position to complete school-wide required
5

courses and PHN required courses. One of the institution's policies is that students must every 2-

year MPH student must complete a public health practice experience for at least three months

over the summer between the 1st and 2nd years in the program. I am prepared to fulfil this

requirement because I do not have many commitments that would take a lot of time.

Career Goals

I have many goals that I am looking forward to meeting when I complete the program.

My particular interest and primary goal are to use knowledge and skills in public health nutrition

to prevent cancer incidents and help those that contract the condition. I am also looking forward

to using the course to reduce the health disparities among cancer patients. This will be a

significant step in achieving healthcare equity. The program will also enable me to realize one of

the healthy people 2020 and 2030 frameworks; enhancing healthy by preventing preventable

health conditions such as cancer using healthy eating habits.
