land on which to build a church and continue spreading the word of God comfortably. When the
church was erected, more well-wishers offered loudspeakers, drums, a keyboard and chairs.
Within a short period, the church was booming.
The church program included overnight prayers every Friday. Some people had approached him
requesting him to either relocate his church, or conduct worship without instruments since the
instruments, especially the speakers, were too loud, hence a source of noise pollution in the
community.

The origin of the African Traditional Religion
 African Tradition Religion came about as a need of human beings searching for a
relationship with the supreme God.
 Africans believed they can reach God through their ancestors.
 This caused them to offer sacrifices and perform rituals as a way of worship.
 African Traditional Religion is included in their culture, practices, symbols, arts, and
their way of life in their particular society.

Foundation of the African Traditional Religion

(Activity 3;11 fountain,3;4 baroque)
Qn. Describe the foundation of the African Traditional Religion.
 African Traditional Religion refers to the original religions of the African people.
 Many ideas try to explain the origin of the African traditional religion.
 The most notable of all is the Animistic idea by Edward Tayler.
 Anima is from a Latin word animistic which means soul.
 It means that African religion developed from the worship of souls of the dead
(ancestors)
 He argued that dreams, visions about the dead caused Africans to conclude that bodies
have souls known as anima.
 Dreaming of the dead meant that people did not really die but continued to exist in
different forms such as animals, trees, springs, volcanos, rivers, stones etc.
 They believed that forms of animals’ life like snakes, lizards and insects which appeared
in their homesteads were souls of their dead relatives who would come to visit them.
 This is the origin of the belief in an unending life.
 They started believing that the whole world is full of spirits and these may be good or
bad and can be angered any time.
 Fear caused people to begin to offer sacrifices to please these gods/ ancestral spirits.
 They also started to practice rituals and ceremonies to gain blessings from them to
escape the likely consequences of their anger.
 It’s from this belief that African traditional religions came about.
