1) In Fig. shown, let B=0.2cos120πt T, and assume that the conductor

joining the two ends of the resistor is perfect. It may be assumed that
magnetic field produced by I(t) is negligible. Find
a. Vab(t)
b. I(t)

2) Given the time varying magnetic field B=(0.5ax+0.6ay-0.3az) cos5000t T, and a square filamentary loop
with its corners at (2,3,0), (2,-3,0), (-2,3,0), (-2,-3,0), find the time varying current flowing in the
general a𝜙 direction if the total loop resistance is 400KΩ

3) Show that the ratio of the amplitudes of the conduction current density and the displacement current
density is 𝜎/(𝜔𝜀) for the applied field E=Em*cos𝜔t. Assume 𝜇= 𝜇0.

4) The ratio Jc/Jd (loss tangent)(conduction current density to displacement current density) is very
important at high frequencies. Calculate the ratio at 1 GHz for:
𝜀o=8.85*10-12
a. distilled water (𝜇=𝜇o, 𝜀=81𝜀o, 𝜎=2×103 S/m )
b. sea water (𝜇=𝜇o, 𝜀=81𝜀o, 𝜎=25 S/m )
c. limestone (𝜇=𝜇o, 𝜀=5𝜀o, 𝜎=2×10-4 S/m )

5) Assuming that sea water has µ=µo, ε=81εo, and σ=20 S/m. determine the frequency at which the
conduction current density is 10 times the displacement current density in magnitude

6) A conductor with cross sectional area of 10 cm2 carries a conduction current 0.2 sin 109t mA. Given
that 𝜎=2.5 × 106 S/m and 𝜀r=4.6, calculate the magnitude of the displacement current density
W=109
𝜀= 𝜀r * 𝜀o

7) Let 𝜇=3×10-5 H/m, 𝜀=1.2×10-10 F/m, and 𝜎=0 everywhere. If H=2cos(1010t-𝛽x) az A/m, use Maxwell’s
equations to obtain expressions for B, D, E, and 𝛽.
