GRAPHING SYSTEM OF LINEAR INEQUALITIES IN TWO VARIABLES What’s In Activity 1: Describe Me! The concept of linear inequalities which you leamed in the previous lesson will help you do the first activity. Do it well and let it guide you as you proceed with the discussion of the system of linear inequalities. Directions: Given the inequalities inside the box, choose the correct inequality that best describes each graph. WBLS-OBE © MELC-Aligned @ ‘Sel Learaing Module © Mademaiicss What is a system of linear inequalities? To help you answer that, let us con example below. xty>4 f = 3x 4.2 8 an example of a system of linear inequalities. A system of linear inequalities is a set of two or more inequalities with the same variables, graphed on the same coordinate plane and they are solved simultaneously. The best way to solve a system of linear inequalities is to use the graphical method. The solution set will be the region that satisfies all the linear inequalities. When solving a system of linear inequalities graphically, we will follow these steps: 1, Solve the inequality for y. 2. Treat the inequality as a linear equation and graph the line as either a solid line or a dashed line depending on the inequality sign a. Ifthe inequality sign used is , then the line to be drawn is a dashed line. b. If the inequality sign used is $ or, then the line to be drawn is a solid line, . Shade the region that satisfies the inequality. Repeat steps 1 —3 for each inequality. 5. The solution set will be the overlapped region of all the inequalities. If the graphs do not overlap, then the system has no solution ae So, let us consider the following examples below on how to solve systems of linear inequalities using the graphical method. Illustrative example 1 ety <4 Find the solution of the system of inequality {**” >" by graphing. Solution Step 1: Solve the inequality for y. Solving for y inx + y < —4, we get: ysnx-4 Step 2: Graph the boundary line for the inequality, To do that, write the inequality as an equation. So the inequality y < —x — 4 becomes y = —x — 4 which is now written in y = mx + b (slope-intercept form) where the slope m= —1 and the y-intercept b= -4, yey pr i WBLS-OBE © — MELC-Alig 2: @ SeleLearaing Module Since the inequality used is < , then the boundary line will be a solid line which can be graphed by locating the y-intercept b= - 4 in the cartesian plane. Then applying the definition of slope m = “ to -1, we have =,which means that from the y-intercept b =—4, we now move ‘unit down and 1 unit to the right, hence locating the second point to be at (1, -5). Drawing a line passing through these two points, we have the graph at the right. Step 3: Shade the region that satisfies the inequi To check the region that satisfies the inequality, pick one point that is not on the line (the point (0,0) is Usually the easiest), and decide whether these coordinates satisfy the inequality or not. Atpoint (0,0), < —x —4isfalse. Hence, the solution set of the inequality will be the set of points below the line, as represented by the shaded region in the graph below. Step 4: Solve the second inequality for y. Solving for yin x- y = 2, we get—y = -x+2. Further, it can be simplified as y < x-2 Take note that when dividing by a negative number, remember to reverse the inequality sign. Step 5: On the same cartesian plane, graph the boundary line for the second inequality y < x-2. To do that, write the inequality as an equation. So the inequality y < x —2 becomes y = x —2 whichis now written in y = mx + b (slope-intercept form) where the slope m= 1and the y-intercept b = -2 Since the inequality contains an equal sign, the boundary line will be a solid line which can be graphed by locating the y-intercept b = -2. Then applying the definition of slope m = “to 1, we have +, which means that from the y-intercept b = — 2, we now move tunit up and 1 unit to the right, hence locating the second point to be at (1,—1). Drawing a line passing through these two points, we now have the graph for the line y = x 2. © © MELC-Aligned « @ ‘Self Learaing Module © Mademaiess 19 Step 6: Shade the region that satisfies the second inequality To check the region that satisfies the inequality, pick one point that is not on the line (the point (0,0) is usually the easiest), and decide whether these coordinates satisfy the inequality or not. bi At point (0, 0), y 4000 * 30x + 400y > 4000 5.
