MIDTERM REVISION SHEETS

Communicating with Graphs: pp 19-23

• A line graph can show any relationship in which the dependent variable changes due to a
change in the independent variable.
• A bar graph uses bars to show the data, words or numbers.
• A bar graph is used for comparing data.
• Circle graphs are useful for showing how a whole is divided into parts

Module 2: Lesson 1: Describing Motion pp 38-39

• Displacement is the distance and direction of the object’s change in position.
• Motion is a change in an object’s position relative to a reference point.
• A reference point is needed to determine the position of an object.

Lesson 1: Changing Speed pp 40-41

• Two common ways of expressing a changing speed are average speed and instantaneous
speed.
• Constant speed of an object remains the same - it does not increase or decrease.
• Average speed is the total distance traveled divided by the total time of travel.
• Instantaneous speed is the speed at a given point in time.

Example:

• A farm animal runs rightward 20 m to eat a juicy apple. It then walks leftward 5m to eat a
nut. Finally, it walks leftward another 25 m to eat another nut. The total time taken by
the farm animal was 250 seconds.
What was the farm animal’s average speed?

Average speed = (total distance) = 20m + 5m + 25m = 0.2 m

(total time) 250s s

Graphing Motion pp 42-44

• On a distance – time graph, time is the x- axis, and distance is the y – axis.
• The slope of a line plotted on a distance time- graph is the speed.
• To get the gradient:
gradient (speed) = (change in distance)
(change in time)

3|T1_G9 Midterm Revision Sheets 2024

• Average velocity is the total displacement divided by the total time taken
• It provides an overall measure of motion for a given time interval
Formula:

Average Velocity = (Final Position - Initial Position) ÷ Total Time

• Average velocity may differ from instantaneous velocity at any given moment
• Example: A car travels 100 km east in 2 hours, then 50 km west in 1 hour
• Total displacement: 50 km east
• Total time: 3 hours
• Average velocity: 50 km east ÷ 3 hours = 16.67 km/h east

•Speed is the rate of motion.
•Speed describes how fast the object is moving.
•Speed is the distance an object travels per unit of time.
•The formula for speed is speed = distance ÷ time
s = d/t (m/s)
Example 1 A cyclist covers a distance of 15 meters in 2 seconds.
Calculate his speed.
Given Solution
distance = 15 meters s= d/t
time = 2 seconds s = 15 m/ 2 s
s = 7.5 m/s
Lesson 2: Velocity and Momentum 48-49

• Momentum: The Product of Mass and Velocity

• Momentum is a measure of the motion of an object.
• It depends on both the object's mass and velocity.
• As velocity increases, momentum increases proportionally.
• Doubling velocity doubles momentum (if mass remains constant)
• Direction of momentum is the same as the direction of velocity
Example: A moving bowling ball has more momentum than a moving ping pong ball
Formula: Momentum = Mass × Velocity
Unit: kg·m/s (kilogram-meters per second)
To calculate the momentum, we use the
FORMULA:
momentum
Which vehicle(p)has
= (mass Kg) (velocity
the greatest m/s)
momentum?
Truck momentum car momentum
Mass = 5000Kg velocity = 10m/s Mass = 2000Kg velocity = 10m/s
momentum (p) = (mass Kg) (velocity m/s) East momentum (p) = (mass Kg) (velocity m/s) East
p = 50,000 Kg.m/s p = 20,000 Kg.m/s

Q1: Which vehicle had the greatest
momentum?
Answer: Truck has the highest momentum
because its mass is high.

Q2: Truck and car drivers are travelling at the

same velocity, which vehicle will stop first?
Answer: Car will stop first when the driver put
on the brakes, due to its less momentum.
(lighter mass)
