Assignments Chapter 2
Transmission of Digital Signals
1. Using two sine wave with frequencies fs e fc illustrate the AM (Amplitude Modulation)
modulation and demodulation process.
2. A modem for communication over telephone circuits uses AM-PSK modulation with 8 levels per
signaling element. Knowing that the telephone channel has a 3100 Hz bandwidth, calculate the
maximum transmission speed according to the Nyquist criteria.
3. Assuming a telephone circuit with a 3000 Hz bandwidth and a signal/noise relation of 20 dB,
calculate the maximum transmission speed.
4. There is the need to transmit a 1000 bit block between two DTE (Data Terminal Equipment).
Calculate the ratio between the propagation delay and the transmission time for the following
cases:
a. A 100 m twisted pair with a transmission speed of 10 Kb/s;
b. A 10 Km coaxial cable with a transmission speed of 1 Mb/s;
c. A 60000 Km satellite connection with a transmission speed of 10 Mb/s.
5. Calculate the theoretical limits for the transmission speed of the following communication
channels:
a. A Telex network with a 500 Hz bandwidth and a 5dB
b. A telephone network with a 3.1 KHz bandwidth and a 10 dB signal/noise ratio.
6. Calculate de minimum bandwidth needed for a 9600 b/s modem transmission using:
a) FSK modulation with 2 levels per signaling element;
b) AM-PSK modulation with 8 levels (symbols) per signaling element;
7. Explain the ASK-PSK hybrid modulation and draw the signal generated by the modem for the
transmission of the digital sequence “1110011100000101010111011111” in groups of four bits.
8. Describe the utility of the µ-law mechanism used in PCM (Pulse Code Modulation).
