Problem Set #3

Subjects: Small Scale Fading

Problem 3.1 Outage Probability

Suppose we have an application that requires a power outage probability of 0.01 for
the threshold P0=−80 dBm. For Rayleigh fading, what value of the average signal
power is required?
Problem 3.2 Level Crossing Rate
For a Rayleigh fading channel with average power 𝑃"! =-90dBm and Doppler 𝑓" =
10 Hz, compute the level crossing rate for target fade values of 𝑃# = −120 dB,
𝑃# = −105 dBm, and 𝑃# = −90 dBm.
Problem 3.3 Average Fade Duration
Derive a formula for the average length of time that a Rayleigh fading process
with average power 𝑃"! stays above a given target fade value 𝑃# . Evaluate this
average length of time for 𝑃"! =-100dBm and 𝑃# = −105 dBm, and 𝑓" = 50 Hz
Problem 3.4 Doppler Shifts
Consider a wireless propagation environment with three signal paths shown in
figure below. Assume that the transmitter transmits an unmodulated exponential
signal at 900MHz. Sketch the spectrum of the received signal. You do not have
to specify the signal levels at the receiver for each path. The mobile is moving
towards the transmitter with the speed of 100 Km/hr.

Problem 3.5 Doppler Power Spectrum
Assume that the Doppler Power Spectral Density for the wireless channel ℎ(𝑡) of a
wireless narrowband channel is given by
1 −10𝐻𝑧 ≤ 𝑓 ≤ 10𝐻𝑧
𝑆% (𝑓) = 2
0 𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑤𝑖𝑠𝑒

(a) Sketch 𝑆% (𝑓). What is the maximum of Doppler shift that a user can experience in
the channel?
(b) Obtain the channel autocorrelation function 𝐴& (Δ𝑡) of the in-phase component for
the channel given above.
(c) The in-phase component of this wireless channel is observed at two consecutive
time instances 𝑡 as ℎ(𝑡) and 𝑡 + Δ𝑡 as ℎ(𝑡 + Δ𝑡), respectively. Find the minimum
value of Δ𝑡 for which the channel response ℎ(𝑡 + Δ𝑡) is approximately uncorrelated
of the channel response ℎ(𝑡). (Hint: For two sinusoidal inputs to the channel
𝑢' (𝑡) = 𝑠𝑖𝑛2𝜋𝑓𝑡 and 𝑢( (𝑡) = sin(2𝜋𝑓(𝑡 + Δ𝑡)) think about the minimum value of
Δ𝑡 for which the channel response to 𝑢' (𝑡) is approximately independent of the
channel response to 𝑢( (𝑡).)
