Ready mix concrete will be used by the approval of Engineer as per specification.

Or

Ordinary Portland cement SLS 107 or Blended hydraulic cement SLS 1247 will be used
by the approval of Engineer as per specification.

Coarse aggregate obtained from approved crusher plant to Sub Section 1701.2 of the
specification. For the above sub section aggregate impact value test will be carried out
accordance with clause vi of BS 812 Part iii 1975.

Fine aggregate - River Sand to Sub Section 1701.2 of the specification will be obtained
from approved sources. Fine aggregate will be stockpiled with identification at site and
will be tested for any clay particles in our site laboratory. This will be carried out in the
presence of consultant staff.

Other
Site Laboratory or central laboratory is functioning at Access site (NPRP) Premises to
carry out routine tests such as Grading of aggregate, Clay & silt content of aggregate,
Preliminary strength test, cube casting, slump testing etc

2.0 Construction Procedure

After excavation of drains, to required dept and with, bottom of drain will be
compacted by manually. As directed by the engineer blind concrete (Grade 15) will be
laid on drain bottom.

2.1 Reinforcement
Bar schedules will be prepared following the approved structural drawings and
submitted for the Engineer’s approval. Reinforcement (R6mm, R10mm, Y10mm
&Y16mm) will be used and bent according to comply with Specification requirement.
Surfaces of reinforcement will be maintained clean and free from foreign matters
always will be handled and stored in a bench or above ground.

2.2 Fabrication
After receiving the approved bar schedules, the fabrication will be done according to
the shape and dimensions in the structural drawings with the tolerances according to
the Specification Section 1002.3 (b) (ii).

Cutting of steel bars will be done by using Hacksaw on a suitable Bench or by

using a Steel cutter.

2.3 Bending

The Bending of steel bars will be done on a suitable Bench locally made.

Adequate care will be taken for bending for maintaining the tolerances as follows
according to the specification.

Clear cover at the location of bar chairs will be –0 to +5 mm (referring to the

specification 1002.3(g).

3.0 Formwork

All formworks will be made of steel shutters or Plywood and will be maintained free
from rust and dent with no surface blemishes.

3.1 Construction & Site Related requirements

a. Clearance Around Form Works

The Arrangement for supporting formwork shall be to give the least practicable
obstruction to access for placing concrete and handling vibrator equipment.

3.2 Weep Holes

Weep holes (50mm dia.) will be placed according to drawings or as directed by the
Engineer. They will be placed properly and not have any movement at the time of
concrete.
Form ties and other temporary fittings used for the support of the formwork shall be
arranged in manner of their removal without damage to the concrete.

3.3 Erection of Formworks

After the forms are erected the dimension and position will be carefully checked to
the line. The joints in formwork as erected will be mortar tight by using some
material.

The interior surface of forms will be treated by Form oil (a mixture Diesel and grease)
Coating will be uniformly spread in a thin film. Forms will be treated before placing
reinforcement so that the oil or grease will not soil the surface of the steel.
Any embedded metal will be placed not less than minimum cover (50mm) for the
surface.
All foreign materiel will be removed before pouring of concrete from the forms.

3.4 Tolerances for Formworks

As the formwork is made to finish concrete to the shape, line and dimensions of the
drawing’s tolerances will be maintained not to exceed the tolerances as mentioned in
Table 1001.10 in special specification.

4.0 Concreting

4.1 Casting for Line Drain Units and concrete cover slabs

Formwork and reinforcement will be prepared according to the type of plan or Design
drawing, or other shape directed by the Engineer.

Formworks will be made by well clean steel shutters or any approved materials with
necessary supports and props over the prepared casting bed to the shape, lines and
dimensions with tolerances mentioned in Specification 1001.10 concrete of as
follows.

Item Tolerance /(mm)

General
• Placing of reinforcement 5
• Concrete over 0 to +5
Cross Section
• Dimension – less than 2m 0 to +3

• Out of square Maximum 5

Squareness of ends Dimension from a plane perpendicular to the
longitudinal axis of a member, or from the
specified end plane
• Dimension – less than 500mm 3mm
- greater than 500mm 6mm per meter (10mm maximum)

Length
• Diagonal length of the precast unit 5

• Overall length or length center to center

of bearings (for beams and slabs) 0.6mm (As the length of the unit is 1.0 m)

4.2 Compaction

Concrete will be compacted by using poker vibrators according to the

specification requirement. The vibrator will be inserted into the concrete vertically
until the whole of the concrete around it has been vibrated to its full depth, then
withdrawn slowly and reinserted at the next position not more than 400mm from
the previous position.
Where more than one layer is placed in a continuous operation, the vibrator will
be inserted to penetrate the full depth of the top layer and into the layer below to
ensure successive are well knitted together.

4.3 Curing

Formworks will be removed 24 hours after casting, and curing will be done by
covering wetted gunny bags. Gunny bags shall be soaked with water for the
following 7 days.

4.4 Repair of Formed Surface

After removing the form works holes porous spots, shallow honeycombs, rough
areas or other minor defects in the concrete surface will be repaired by removing
any loose or defective material and filling with stiff cement mortar which having
same proportion of Cement and fine aggregate in the used concrete subject to
4.4.1 and 4.4.2.

4.4.1 Minor Repairs.

Minor repair will be done after getting approval from the engineer for repair
procedure. Until such repairs are commenced the defective surface will be
kept continuously moist. Repairs will be done within 7 days after the removal
of form works.

4.4.2 Major Repair.

The construction joints will be saturated before concreting.

All areas of honeycombs or non-compaction which are visible when the forms
are removed are considered as major defects. In such a case QCM will issue
Non-Conformance Report (NCR) with a copy to the Engineer. After
inspecting the Engineer, repair will be done according to the approved method
statement.
Major repair shall be cut back to sound concrete and the cavity will be
extending 20 mm in minimum behind the exposed reinforcement. The cavity
will be in square.

5.0 Backfilling

Filling around the structure will be done using approved filling material and
backfilling will be commenced only after the concrete has matured. In case of
emergency filling it, it will be with the Engineer’s approval.

Compaction of backfilled will be done as described below.

The top 450mm of the layers will be compacted to a density not less than 98% of
maximum dry density and lower layers of the backfill will be compacted to a density
not less than 95% of maximum dry density by the Modified compaction according to
test 13 BS 1377 –75.

The maximum thickness of loose material will be 225mm or determined from

compaction trials using the actual compaction plant.

6.0 Measurements

Pre-cast cover slabs will be measured in cum according pay item 806 (4)

Excavation and backfilling for units will be measured in cum. under pay item 301A
(1, 2, and 3).

Casting drains will be measured in cum. and pay items will be 701 (2) a & b.

7.0 Safety precautions

• Safety helmets, Hand gloves will be provided.

• All site personnel will be acknowledged regarding safety precautions
• First aid box will be maintained at the site
• Proper communication facilities will be maintained with accident Prevention Officer.
