A simply supported beam, subjected to uniformly varying load of 12 KN/m, has a

length of 20m. It is required to determine
 maximum tensile stress,
 maximum shear stress,
 maximum compressive stress.
Assume beam is made up of steel rectangular section.

SOLUTION:-

GIVEN DATA
SIMPLY SUPPORTED BEAM
UDL W 12 KN/m
LENGTH L 20 m
WIDTH OF THE BEAM b 5 cm
DEPTH OF THE BEAM D 20 cm
CROSS SECTION OF THE BEAM RECTANGULAR
MATERIAL OF THE BEAM STEEL

TO FIND
MAXIMUM TENSILE STRESS
MAXIMUM SHEAR STRESS
MAXIMUM COMPRESSIVE STRESS

FORMULA USED

Where,

S = Shear Force at the section

A = cross sectional area of section above point where stress is calculated
Y' = Centroidal distance of area A from N.A.
I = Area Moment of Inertia of the cross section about neutral axis
b = width of the section at the point of calculation of shear stress
From the above diagram it is clear that
A = b (d/2 - y)
Y' = y + (d/2 - y)/2 = (y + d/2)/2
I = bd3/12

M = Bending moment
I = Area moment of inertia of the cross section about neutral axis

Y=
E = Young's Modulus of Elasticity
R = Radius of Curvature

Taking Y at maximum distance from neutral axis we can get the bending stress.
These bending stresses will give maximum tensile and compressive stress below
and above neutral axis or vice versa.

PROCEDURE
 The shear force and the bending moment of the beam at various sections
are calculated.
 Using the above mentioned formula the corresponding stress values are
calculated at every point on the beam.
 Using the maximum function in the excel the corresponding values of
maximum tensile stress and maximum shear stress is calculated & using
minimum function in excel the value of maximum compressive stress is
obtained.
