PRELIMS (COM02)

I.SOLVE THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS:

1. How many binary bits are required to obtain a coding efficiency of 90% if 4 bits are
used? How many outputs can be produced using the original binary bits? If decimal
digits are used, what will be the new coding efficiency?
2. The voltage range being input to a PCM system is 0 to 5 V. A 3-bit A/D converter is used
to convert the analog signal to digital values. How many quantization levels are
provided? What is the resolution of each level? What is the value of the quantization
error for this system?
3. Determine the alias frequency for the following sample rates and analog input
frequencies: Illustrate. Also, determine if correct sampling, undersampling or
oversampling
fa (kHz) fs (kHz)
4 5
4 9
5 10
4. For a resolution of 0.035 V, determine the voltages for the following linear 8-bit sign-
magnitude PCM codes. Also, draw the codes indicated:
a. 0 1 0 1 0 1 0 0 (UPRZ)
b. 1 0 1 0 1 0 1 0 (UPNRZ)
c. 0 1 1 0 1 0 1 1 (BPRZ)
d. 1 0 0 0 1 1 0 1 (BPNRZ)
e. 0 1 1 0 1 0 1 0 (BPRZ-AMI)
5. Determine the resolution and quantization error for an eight-bit linear sign-magnitude
PCM code for a maximum decoded voltage of 1.27 V. Also, determine the dynamic
range in ratio and in dB.
6. The following values of μ, Vmax, and Vin, determine the compressor gain:

II.ANSWER THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS:

1. Illustrate the following:
a) PWM and PPM
b) a) Digital Transmission using Analog Channel
b) Digitized Analog Transmission
c) How noise immunity is achieved in digital system
2. Why is the output of a Delta Modulator, a staircase? Which part/process in the block
diagram give such output? Does this lead to Delta Modulator being more efficient than
PCM in terms of bandwidth requirement? Explain.
3. Describe the relationship between SQR, resolution, quantization interval and
quantization noise?
4. What is Companding? Differentiate the two types of Companding. How does
companding affect the dynamic range of a digital system? Explain in full.
5. a) Differentiate Unipolar and Bipolar codes in terms of power savings.
a) Differentiate RZ and NRZ in terms bit-clock recovery and minimum bandwidth
requirement
b) Describe BPRZ-AMI being the only code with error-detecting capability.
6. Differentiate the two figures below. What kind of sampled output is produced by each?
Explain.

BONUS:
1. Comment on this: Coding allows speech to be compressed to its minimum essential
content and therefore, permits the greatest possible efficiency in transmission. What
does this efficiency refer to? Explain.
2. What factors limit the line speed of a signal? What factors limit the quality of a signal?
Are the factors the same? Why or why not? Explain.
