Master’s Thesis assessment criteria

1. Quality of content

• Quality of the thesis


o Problem definition and main research
 e.g. Is the main research question clear and original? Are
there any subquestions? Are those questions clearly defined?
o Background / Theory
 e.g. Was a sufficient number of relevant scientific theories
used and were they used correctly? Does the thesis contain a
critical review of the literature?
o Research methodology
 e.g. Was the methodology valid, reliable and suitable? Was
the methodology substantiated and applied correctly?
o Data quality and analysis
 e.g. Are the data correctly collected and analysed?
o Critical analysis of results
 e.g. Does the researcher critically reflect on the research
approach used?
o Conclusions
 e.g. Are conclusions correctly linked to the data and analysis
presented?
• Degree of innovativeness
 e.g. Is the study innovative in theory, methodology or field of
application and is this illustrated in the literature review?
• Presentation of the report
 e.g. Is the sequence of chapters and sections correct? / Is the
final document attractive in wording and appearance?

2. Quality of the process

• Degree of independent work


 e.g. Was there good planning? Did the student need a lot of
support from his or her supervisors?
• Degree of initiative shown
 e.g. Did the student come up with most ideas and solutions
himself/herself?
• Cooperation and communication with supervisors/instructors
 e.g. Did the student do what was agreed? Were the meetings
with the supervisor prepared well and well in advance?

3. Quality of the oral presentation (if applicable)

• Structure
 e.g. Was there a good balance between introduction, body and
conclusions?
• Content
e.g. Was there a clear problem definition / research question?
Were theory, data collection, analytical approach and
arguments for conclusions well addressed? Was the
presentation tailored to the audience?
• Proficiency in the English language (if applicable)
• Quality and use of audiovisual media
• Contact with the audience
• Did the speaker answer audience questions well?
