Some might say there are two types of people in the world: pessimists and optimists. People
who subscribe to pessimism look at the negative aspects of things and events. __31__ At first
glance, pessimism may seem like a bad trait, while optimism may seem like a good trait. But that is
not always the case.
A strategy known as defensive pessimism may be used by people who are faced with a
stressful situation. As with regular pessimism, someone using defensive pessimism will imagine the
situation going poorly. But unlike regular pessimism, the person will then think about how to
prevent the poor result from happening. __32__ As a result, they are more likely to succeed.
For example, if someone applying for a job only utilizes pessimism, they will think about all of
the ways the job interview could go poorly. This may cause large amounts of stress and anxiety,
which then results in the interview actually going poorly. However, if they used defensive
pessimism, after thinking about the negative possibilities, they would take steps to prevent those
things from happening. __33__ Since their defensive pessimism has motivated them to prepare,
they are more likely to do well.
On the other side of defensive pessimism is strategic optimism. With this strategy, a person
avoids thinking about possible negative outcomes. __34__ This strategy is most useful for people
who do not get anxious easily. But it is no more or less effective than defensive pessimism. The key
is for each person to find the strategy that works best for them.
(A) Instead, they set high expectations and look forward to achieving them.
(B) On the other hand, those who are optimistic try to find the positive aspects.
(C) This might include doing more research on the company or preparing answers for potential
interview questions.
(D) By clearly thinking through each possible scenario, they are able to thoroughly prepare
themselves accordingly.

Relief is a unique form of sculpture that has stood the test of time. In fact, evidence suggests
that it dates back more than 20,000 years. The term “relief” refers to sculptures in which one or
more figures are at a higher level than the background scene. The earliest relief creations were made
using stone, clay, and wood. However, Chinese and Japanese artists got a bit more creative and used
gold and ivory to create some elaborate reliefs.
There are three major styles of relief. The first is the low relief, which was popular in Ancient
Egypt and Assyria. The centerpiece of low reliefs are figures that pop up slightly from a flat
background. Many modern coins, which feature an elevated portrait of a leader, fit into this
category as well. The second style of relief is the high relief. The Ancient Greeks and Romans were
pioneers in this style. High relief focuses on three-dimensional figures that are typically more
detailed and lifelike than low relief figures. As a general rule, the main figure in high-relief artwork
protrudes at least 50% of its natural circumference from the background. The third style is sunken
relief. Unlike the other styles which extend outwards, sunken relief sculptures are carved into a flat
surface. Sunken reliefs featured prominently in Ancient Egyptian artwork. The style is still common
today for inscriptions on gravestones or words carved into stone buildings.
In the 1800s, Italian artists introduced relief art to the US while they were designing
government buildings in the nation’s capital. In 1927, artists would use high relief to create one of
the country’s most famous landmarks: Mount Rushmore. This enormous granite relief was carved
into the side of a mountain. This monument displays the heads of four of America’s greatest
presidents. Each head is 60 feet tall, so it can be seen clearly from great distances.

sentence?
(A) The two birds are cut deep into the tombstone.
(B) The patterns on the tombstone are detailed and lifelike.
(C) The inscriptions on the tombstone are beyond recognition.
(D) The ravens pop up slightly from the surface of the tombstone.
D 36. According to the passage, what determines the differences between the three major styles of
relief?
(A) The patterns carved out of them.
(B) The three-dimensional figures on them.
(C) The complexity of the subjects they depict.

Over the past few years, the spread of false information has run rampant. In many cases, it is
extremely difficult to separate fact from fiction. To combat this issue, some clever computer
programmers have created games that help people detect fake news.
The spread of fake news has hit parts of Africa particularly hard. Misleading Facebook posts
about politics and current events led to violence in Kenya and Nigeria. In response, Pollicy, a
Ugandan technology group, designed a free game called Choose Your Own Fake News. It shows
players that spreading fake news can lead to disastrous results in real life. The game has three main
characters of different ages and walks of life. Players must put themselves in each character ’s shoes
and make decisions based upon posts and news stories they come across in the game. If players
choose incorrectly, they can be cheated out of their money or cause group violence. The goal of the
game is to make people think more critically about the news they consume.
Students at Cambridge University had a similar goal when they created Bad News. In this
game, players must build up a social media following by posting fake information that is designed
to grab people’s attention. This can include things such false quotes or statements from celebrities
or images that have been photoshopped. Although this may sound sinister, it’s actually a clever way
of teaching players the techniques that are commonly used to trick people into believing fake news.
The idea is that if people become aware of these methods, they are less likely to be fooled by them
in the future.
D 39. What is the passage mainly about?
(A) Organizations aimed at curbing cyber fraud.
(B) Techniques to distinguish right from wrong.
(C) Impacts of social media on modern people.
(D) Games to build resistance against online misinformation.

As languages evolve, they acquire colorful idioms based on speakers’ observations about the
world. Here are three interesting phrases in English that relate to specific countries.
Dutch courage
The expression “Dutch courage” means that a person builds up their confidence as they drink
more and more alcohol. This expression reportedly dates back to the Anglo-Dutch era, which took
place during the 1700s. According to legend, it began when British sailors got a hold of some high-
quality gin produced in the Netherlands. They took a fancy to the drink and discovered that having
a few sips before battle helped them ease their nerves and perform their duties more courageously.
This is how the phrase Dutch courage was born.
