ME 570: Engineering Analysis I

Homework 5
due 12-02-22 (by 5pm)

1. Write the following expressions in the form a + ib

(i)
i7
(ii)
(2 − 3i)(4 + i)
(iii)
i 1
3−i 2 + 3i
2. Write the following expressions in polar form reiθ
(i) √
− 3+i
(ii)
3
−1 + i
(iii)
i(5 − 2i)
3. In Problem 1(ii) and 1(iii), carry out the multiplication and divi-
sion in polar form. Compare with the answers a + ib that you
obtained previously and verify that you get the same answers.
4. Compute the indicated powers
10
√ 9

 1 i
(i) 1 + 3i , (ii) +
2 2

5. Compute all roots. Indicate the location of the roots on a circle

centered at the origin
 √ 1/2
(i) i1/3 , (ii) −1 + 3i

6. Use the formula

(cos θ + i sin θ)n = (cos(nθ) + i sin(nθ))

to obtain formulas for cos(3θ) and sin(3θ).

7. Using the basic definition involving limits, show that f (z) =
2z + 3 is differentiable at any point in the complex plane.
8. Show that the following two functions are not differentiable at
any point
f (z) = 2x + ixy 2 , f (z) = ex e−iy
9. The following two functions are analytic:
f (z) = z 3 , f (z) = 3z 2 + 5z − 6i
(i) Verify that they satisfy the sufficient conditions for a func-
tion to be analytic.
(ii) Verify that u(x, y) and v(x, y), the real and imaginary parts,
of each function satisfy Laplace’s equation.
(iii) Obtain f ′ (z) for each function by computing the partials of
u and v.
10. Using the definition of the complex exponential function express
the following functions in the form u(x, y) + iv(x, y).
2
(i) ez , (ii) e2z̄
and write each in the form a + ib at the point z = −1 + i(π/4).
11. Show that
sin(iy) = i sinh(y), cos(iy) = cosh(y)
12. Write the following functions in the form a + ib.
(i) tan(i), (ii) cos(2 − 4i)
13. Find all values of z such that

ez = 3+i
14. Without actuallyHcomputing the integral prove that in each of the
following cases C f (z)dz = 0, where C is the circle | z |= 1:
z sin(z)
(a) f (z) = , (b) f (z) =
2z + 3 (z 2 − 25)(z 2 + 9)
15. Using Cauchy’s integral formula, evaluate the following integrals
z
I
(a) dz,
C z +9
2

where C is the circle | z − 2i |= 4.

z
I
(b) dz,
C 2z + 1

where C is the square whose sides lie along the lines x = ±2

and y = ±2.
16. For the following function
1
f (z) = ,
(z − 1)2 (z − 3)
obtain the Laurent’s series about each of the singular points and
indicate the domain of convergence in each case
17. Evaluate
5z − 2
I
dz,
C z(z − 1)
where C is the circle | z |= 2, using the Residue theorem.
