Question 1 (10 marks): Consider the following batch reactor experiment where the concentration of

a product formed is measured over time. The data is as follows:

Time (𝑡) in hours 0 1 2 3 4

Concentration (𝐶) in mol/L 0.75 1.40 1.95 2.49 2.50

Assuming a first-order reaction, determine the rate constant 𝑘. Use the equation:
𝐶
𝑙𝑛 = 𝑘𝑡
𝐶
Where 𝐶 is the initial concentration, 𝐶 is the concentration at time 𝑡, and 𝑘 is the rate constant.

Question 2 (10 marks): In a chemical process, the pressure drop (∆𝑃) is modeled using the
equation:
∆𝑃 = 𝑎𝜌𝜐 + 𝑏∆ℎ
where 𝜌 is the fluid density, 𝜐 is the velocity, ∆ℎ is the change in height, and 𝑎 and 𝑏 are constants. If
𝜌 = 1000 𝑘𝑔⁄𝑚 , 𝜐 = 2 𝑚⁄𝑠, and ∆ℎ = 10𝑚, and the constants 𝑎 = 0.5 and 𝑏 = 9.81, calculate the
pressure drop.

Question 3 (20 marks): In a chemical process, the reaction rate (𝑦) is measured at different
temperatures (𝑥)to determine the relationship between the two. The following data is collected:
Temperature (𝒙) in oC Reaction Rate (𝒚) in mol/L
30 2.5
40 3.0
50 3.5
60 4.2
70 5.1

Use linear regression to find the relationship between temperature and reaction rate. Find the slope
and the intercept of the regression line. Show the detail of your work and formula that is being used.

Question 4 (30 marks)

You have a spherical storage tank containing oil. The tank has
a diameter of 6ft. You are asked to calculate the height ℎ to
which a dipstick 8 ft long would be wet with oil when immersed
in the tank when it contains 60 ft3 of oil. The equation that gives
the height ℎ of the liquid in the spherical tank for the given
volume and radius is given by
3𝑉
𝑓(ℎ) = ℎ − 3𝑅ℎ + =0
𝜋
Use the Bisection method, Secant method and Newton-
Raphson method of finding roots of equations to find the height
ℎ to which the dipstick is wet with oil. Conduct three iterations to
estimate the root of the above equation. Find the absolute
relative approximate error at the end of each iteration and the
number of significant digits at least correct at the end of each
iteration.

Question 5 (30 marks)

The concentration of salt 𝑥 in a homemade soap maker is given as a function of time by
𝑑𝑥
= 37.5 − 3.5𝑥
𝑑𝑡
At the initial time, 𝑡 = 0, the salt concentration in the tank is 50 g/L. Using Euler’s method and Runge-
Kutta 2nd order method and Runge-Kutta 4th order method and a step size of 1.5 min, what is the
salt concentration after 3 minutes?

Question 4 (25 marks): A homogeneous reaction occurs in a Plug Flow Reactor (PFR) at 𝑇 = 215℃.
The consumption reaction rate of component A is described by the equation:
𝑟 = −𝑘𝐶
where 𝑟 is the rate of consumption of A in mol/L.s. 𝐶 is the concentration of A in mol/L, and 𝑘 =
0.01 𝐿⁄𝑚𝑜𝑙. 𝑠. The feed consists of 50% A and 50% inert gas, with an initial concentration of 𝐶 =
0.0625 𝑚𝑜𝑙 ⁄𝐿. Determine the volume of the PFR needed to achieve 80% conversion of A.
