Inaugration

A 5 days skill development program was inaugurated on 24 September 2024 by the

department of Civil Engineering. The trainers were from Bharath Bhoomi Ltd. Bangalore.
Here we were given insights about the software such as Google Earth Pro, QGIS and Google
Earth Engine and the practical application of these software in civil engineering.
The inauguration was followed by Day 1 training at the respective lab.

The inauguration was followed by day 1 training of the skill development program. The
morning session was very energetic for an extensive 5 days skill development program In the
morning session, we were introduced to the fundamental concepts of maps, including the
basic elements such as map scale, legend, and coordinate systems. We also explored the key
components of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), including how GIS integrates spatial
data with tools for analysing and visualizing geographic information. A focus was given to
the distinction between vector data (points, lines, and polygons) and raster data (grids and
pixels), emphasizing their respective uses in mapping and spatial analysis. We were also
introduced to QGIS, where we learned about its user-friendly interface and how it allows us
to create, manage, and analyse spatial data effectively. In the afternoon session, we shifted
focus to Google Earth Pro, where we explored its various tools for visualizing and editing
geographic data. We practiced adding points, lines, and polygons to maps, enhancing our
understanding of spatial data representation. This hands-on experience gave us practical
insights into how GIS software can be used to manage and analyse geographic information in
real-world scenarios.

Day 2
The day 2 of the skill development program begin with extensive knowledge about QGIS. In
the morning session we were taught about the raster and vector files and how to add them as
layers. The main difference between these two files is that raster is continues and saved as
tiff, jpeg or png format while that vector files and discrete and saved in .shp format. We were
also taught about the .csv files that is comma separated values which is a plain text file that
uses specific structuring to arrange tabular data. We tried adding Bangalore wards as layer
and worked on it. In the afternoon session we were taught about the symbology option which
appears to the visual appearance of the map layer. Here, we learnt about the types of data
such as categorized and graduated. Different types of color range could be used to represent
and differentiate the data. Later, we learnt about the labelling option, which refers to the
textual information, that can be displayed on vector features or maps. They rely on attribute
data of the layer. These features in QGIS makes the map more appealing, readable and easy
to extract information of data.

Day 3
The third day of the skill development program began with a short revision of the previous
days. The students were explained about georeferencing which means referencing our data
with respect to earth. Using QGIS we started with an already prepared map by the teaching
team and downloaded data/tools from plugins after which we worked on the map by placing
points and adding coordinates where the points were placed after which we applied a layer of
google satellite map enabling us to georeferenced the already given map to the precise

location on earth’s surface. It was later highlighted to save the data in shapefile format and were
explained about its functions and how it was developed by ESRI and could contain only 2GP.
In the evening session, we were thought on how to digitize points, lines, and polygons on a
map. Later we were also taught how to use raster calculator to add or manipulate data where
we learned various coding formulas for calculating various data; example: we learned how to
calculate NDVI for a specified area and got to know that it’s calculated value can lie only
between -1 to +1. We even learned to interpolate using tools in QGIS.
Later we learned how to make Maps of any desired area using software like QGIS and
Google Earth Pro. The following is an attachment of the map we made in class:

Day 4
On the day 4th of our skill development we briefly dealt about a remote sensing, its types
and its application then we explore a mobile data collection and its applications in a wide
aspect where we could where we could understand the advancement and usage of online
application to ease and civil engineering to monitor the work and then the afternoon session
which was the icing on the cake as we were given a problem statement and we were given a
different problem statement for each teams and a problem statement dealt with various
software Skill Development Programmed.

1. Map trees in your college campus with the following details: Location of tree,
Image of tree, Type of tree, Fruit-bearing tree & non-fruit-bearing tree,
Approximate height in feet, Condition of the tree (good/bad), Remarks, Name of
the data collector. Download the dataset, import the data in QGIS, and visualize
the outputs in a map layout, saving it in JPEG format.Download two different
years of imagery from Google Earth Pro of Mysore Suburbs. Georeference both
the images, digitize the buildings and roads, and calculate the total built-up area
increase.State-wise COVID vaccination data divided by State population and
colour based on percentage. Show the final output as a map with all map
elements.Complete metro map of Bangalore showing all stations and different
lines. Show the final output as a map with all map elements.Create a map of your
college showing all departments with details like department name, courses
offered, and number of students. Do labelling, styling, and visualize the outputs in
a map layout, saving it in JPEG format.Conduct terrain analysis for any area in the
Western Ghats, including aspect, hillshade, slope, and contours. Visualize the
outputs in four map layouts, saving them in JPEG format. In the UTM road and
UTM buildings data, draw Mysore road of 4 km in road layer, digitize 40 buildings
along the road in the building layer, do a buffer of 25 m on road, and then do
intersection and calculate compensation at Rs 8000/sqft.

Day 5
The final day of the skill development was as good and interesting as the previous days and
we learned many new concepts.
We learned to use Google Earth Engine to perform various task. The teacher taught us how to
use the code editor in the GEE to analyze the rain capacity of a required area. Summarizing
the method, we learned started with finding the longitude and latitude of a specified location
(here, NIE) and input code in the GEE of the particular range of date or year we wanted
rainfall capacity data.

On the afternoon session with continuation of the morning we learned how to digitize a
polygon on Google Earth Pro of a specified area of which we want rainfall data on
(playground near NIE college) and save it in .kml form and open it in QGIS and save as .shp
format and zip it later which is used in GEE for finding rain capacity of the marked / digitized
polygon. The following figure attached is of the said above:
