MCL 111 Solution to Minor II 15/10/2023

Name : E.No.: Group:

Answer in the question paper. Write your name, E.No. and group on both sheets in the
designated area.

Q1. Design a slider crank mechanism of stroke length 50 cm, for a QRR of 1.4 and
offset of 15 cm.
a) Sketch the mechanism in the two dead center positions.
b) Note down the lengths of the two finite length links. (3 + 1)
𝜃12
1.4 = 360−𝜃 or 12 = 210o. Angle subtended at O2 = 30o.
12

Lengths are: 45 cm and 23 cm

Q2. Consider the kinematic diagram below of a mechanism where the link pivoted at
O2 turns anticlockwise from the 30O position by 60O while the link pivoted at O4 turns
clockwise from the 45O position by 90O. The length O2O4 is 6 cm. The length of link O4B
is specified to be 4 cm and its two positions are indicated. For link O2A, only the line on
which A lies in the two positions is indicated. Design the mechanism as follows:

a) Identify the relative pole and mark it R12.

Mark angle of -30O at O2 and locate R12 at its intersection with line drawn at angle +45O
at O4 (same as O4B2).
b) Use the invariance of angles subtended by driver and driven link at the
relative pole to design the mechanism. Note down the length O2A.
The angle subtended by O4B1 at R12 is 52.2O and draw the line R12H on which A1 lies.
Measure O2A = 3.8
c) What is the minimum transmission angle over this range of movement?
It is 0O when the input link is at A1.
d) What would the author of “The minds eye”, E. S. Ferguson, have to say
about this design? (3 + 3 + 2 + 2)
You can make two links rotate in opposite directions. But a blind solution may lead to
dead center positions when we lose control over the mechanism.

Q3. Consider the 4R mechanism and the corresponding acceleration diagram shown in
the figure below. The lengths of links 1 through 4 are 8.0, 3.5, 10.0 and 9.0 cm
respectively. The figure in the left also indicates that angular velocity of all the links and
that link 2 now has an angular acceleration of 600 rad/s2 in the CW direction.
a) What are the angular acceleration of link 3 and link 4 in this configuration?
b) What is the angular acceleration of link4 if the angular acceleration of link 3 is
900 rad/s2 in the CCW direction for the same configuration and velocity input but
changed angular acceleration of link 2?
c) What is the angular acceleration of link 2 for which this happens?
(2 + 5 + 3)

𝑇
a) Scaling from the diagram: 𝑎𝐷𝐵 = 13200 𝑐𝑚/𝑠 2 , 𝑎𝐷𝑇 = 18000 𝑐𝑚/𝑠 2 . Using the
lengths, 𝜃̈3 = 1320 rad/s2 CCW and 𝜃̈4 = 2000 rad/s2 CCW.
𝜔 18.7
b) 𝜃̈4 = (𝜃̈4 )0 + 𝜔4 𝜃̈3 ; (𝜃̈4 )0 = 2000 − 25.0 × 1320 =1013. Using 𝜃̈3 = 900; 𝜃̈4 =
3
1686 rad/s2 CCW
36.7
c) Using the same approach, 𝜃̈2 = −600 + 25.0 (1320 − 900) = 17 rad/s2 CCW (will
accept any answer less than ‖100‖ rad/s2)
Q4. The function y = x2 for 0.5 ≤ x ≤ 1 is to be generated using a four bar mechanism
with the input link moving from 20O to 70O and the output link moving over a range of
90O. Construct the mechanism as follows using the base link as shown below:
a. Find three Chebyshev precision configurations of the mechanism by identifying the
orientation of the input link and the corresponding motions of the output link. (5)
b. With the assumption that the input link is 2/3 the length of the base link, synthesise
the mechanism using inversion. (5)
