Answer in the question paper. Write your name, E.No. and group on both sheets in the
designated area.
Q1. Design a slider crank mechanism of stroke length 50 cm, for a QRR of 1.4 and
offset of 15 cm.
a) Sketch the mechanism in the two dead center positions.
b) Note down the lengths of the two finite length links. (3 + 1)
𝜃12
1.4 = 360−𝜃 or 12 = 210o. Angle subtended at O2 = 30o.

Q3. Consider the 4R mechanism and the corresponding acceleration diagram shown in
the figure below. The lengths of links 1 through 4 are 8.0, 3.5, 10.0 and 9.0 cm
respectively. The figure in the left also indicates that angular velocity of all the links and
that link 2 now has an angular acceleration of 600 rad/s2 in the CW direction.
a) What are the angular acceleration of link 3 and link 4 in this configuration?
b) What is the angular acceleration of link4 if the angular acceleration of link 3 is
900 rad/s2 in the CCW direction for the same configuration and velocity input but
changed angular acceleration of link 2?
c) What is the angular acceleration of link 2 for which this happens?
(2 + 5 + 3)
𝑇
a) Scaling from the diagram: 𝑎𝐷𝐵 = 13200 𝑐𝑚/𝑠 2 , 𝑎𝐷𝑇 = 18000 𝑐𝑚/𝑠 2 . Using the
lengths, 𝜃̈3 = 1320 rad/s2 CCW and 𝜃̈4 = 2000 rad/s2 CCW.
𝜔 18.7
b) 𝜃̈4 = (𝜃̈4 )0 + 𝜔4 𝜃̈3 ; (𝜃̈4 )0 = 2000 − 25.0 × 1320 =1013. Using 𝜃̈3 = 900; 𝜃̈4 =

1686 rad/s2 CCW
36.7
c) Using the same approach, 𝜃̈2 = −600 + 25.0 (1320 − 900) = 17 rad/s2 CCW (will
accept any answer less than ‖100‖ rad/s2)
Q4. The function y = x2 for 0.5 ≤ x ≤ 1 is to be generated using a four bar mechanism
with the input link moving from 20O to 70O and the output link moving over a range of
90O. Construct the mechanism as follows using the base link as shown below:
a. Find three Chebyshev precision configurations of the mechanism by identifying the
orientation of the input link and the corresponding motions of the output link. (5)
b. With the assumption that the input link is 2/3 the length of the base link, synthesise
the mechanism using inversion. (5)
