Course Title: Integrated Software Applications
Term / S/Y: Second Semester / 2021 – 2022
Instructor: Maria Cristina S. V. Diño
I. COURSE DESCRIPTION
Integration of applications from popular business productivity
software suites; instruction in embedding data, linking and
combining documents using word processing, spreadsheets,
databases, and/or presentation media software.
II. COURSE OBJECTIVES
This is a hands-on course in which you will learn to use a
computer to practice the four most popular programs within the
Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Publisher, and PowerPoint).
You will learn to be an intermediate level user of the Microsoft
Office Suite.
Within the Microsoft Office Suite, you will use Word, Excel,
Publisher, and PowerPoint.
Microsoft Word is a word processing program with which you
can create common business and personal documents.
Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet program that organizes and
calculates accounting-type information.
Microsoft Publisher is an entry-level desktop publishing
application from Microsoft, differing from Microsoft Word in that
the emphasis is placed on page layout and design rather than text
composition and proofing.
Finally, Microsoft PowerPoint is a presentation graphics
program with which you can develop slides to accompany an oral
presentation.

Module 1
Week 1
Computers in Business and Industry
The development of writing and the inventions of the printing press,
telegraph, telephone, automobile and airplane are all among the
significant achievements of humankind, and each has dramatically
changed the way people communicate with each other.
Each has increased people’s ability to interact faster and over greater
distances for less money. Each has also increased additional educational
opportunities for millions of people. With each of these innovations, access
to information has become more widespread. The computer is the latest
achievement in this line of revolutionary changes that has affected the
transmission of information.
Computers are everywhere!
QUESTION:
From office desks to kitchen tables, from
WHAT IS A library tables to people’s laps in coffee shops,
COMPUTER? the screen and keyboard combination is a
familiar sight!
But if you look more carefully, you’ll discover that computers exist in
even more places than you first realize. Cash registers in stores have
computers inside that calculate prices and help manage inventory.
Most cars produced today have diagnostic computers to help find
problems and improve performance. Cell phones contain computers, and

wristwatches often rely on simple computers for stopwatch and calendar
functions.
Since the 1970s, computers have rapidly reshaped personal and
business life as we know it. Factories and industrial companies often use
computer controlled machinery.
Professional occupations such as law, engineering, medicine, and
finance use computers almost universally. Many workers who once had
little use for technology now interact with computers almost every minute
of the workday.
At home, people use computers to read the news, play games, and
keep in touch with family and friends. News from around the world is
instantly available. More and more people have international friends and
colleagues, and they can use computers to communicate.
In the simplest terms, a computer is any machine that accepts
some kind of input, processes that data by performing actions
and calculations according to a set of instructions (digitally
stored within the computer’s memory), and returns an output or
the result of its calculations.

All computers, regardless of their size, purpose, or type, follow this
definition.
There are four major components of a computer system:
Take a stopwatch for example:
First, it accepts a command to start (such as a person pressing the
button). Next, it counts the passing of time. And it shows the time on a
screen to the person holding the stopwatch.
Let us break it down one by one…
Which is the Input? Process? Output?
A person pressing Counting of the The time
the button passing of time displayed on the
screen

Okay…
So, we have identified the input, the process and the output. But
where does memory come in?

As mentioned earlier, a computer performs actions and calculations
according to a set of instructions (digitally stored within the computer’s
memory).
This only means that the input may only be processed if an instruction
exists in the computer’s memory. Without instructions, a computer will not
do anything.
Imagine trying to cook when you don’t know what to cook and how
to cook!
Unless there is an instruction, a computer will not be able to process
any data.
So, now, we know that there must be an input which the processor
will process – but only if there is an instruction stored in the computer’s
memory. And after these calculations, an output will be returned.
We also mentioned that the instructions are digitally stored within
the computer’s memory.
We’ll get back to that later.
INPUT VS. INPUT DEVICES
What is an input and what is an input device? We say that there must
be an input. But what is an input?
Input data – or simply “input” – is the data given by the user to the
computer. (Examples: pressing of a key on the keyboard; or clicking or
moving the mouse.
So what are input devices then?
Input devices are the devices which a user might use to send data to
the computer. Also, input devices serve as interpreter for the computer
and the user.
How?

Just like humans, computers have a language they know and
understand. Humans have different languages: English, Chinese, Filipino,
Japanese, Spanish, etc. The list goes on.
But then, there must be a language a computer utilizes too!
Computers only understand one.
This is called the machine language.
Machine language is the only language that computers understand.
It is composed of the binary number system.
If we look inside the computer’s memory, all we’ll see are
the digits 1 and 0.
Ever watched movies about computers, robots or Artificial
Intelligences?
Most likely, you’ll hear (or see) these digits (1, 0) because computers
are built with these.
This is why we mentioned earlier that instructions are “digitally
stored” within the computer’s memory. Because the instructions are in
digital form – meaning they are just a series of ones and zeroes.
In later discussions, we will be further discussing binary and the other
number systems.
So, how could we understand computers?
And how do computers understand us?
How do we tell a computer what to do?
Simple! Input devices have solved this problem!
Input devices accept input data from user and converts that data into
machine language so that computers would understand what the data is
and what must be done to the data.
So in general, input devices are hardware devices which take
information from the user of the computer system, convert it into electrical

signals (machine language) and transmit it to the processor. The primary
function of input devices is to allow humans to interact with the computer
system.
Now, let us see some of the most commonly used input devices!

OUTPUT VS. OUTPUT DEVICES
Now, what is an output and what is an output device?
We know now what inputs and input devices are. So, what is an
output and what is an output device?

Output data – or simply output – is the processed data returned by
the computer back to the user. (Example: a display on the screen.)
So what are output devices then?
Output devices are the devices which a user might use to receive the
processed data from the computer. Also, output devices serve as
interpreter for the computer and the user too.
How?
Just like input devices, output devices serve as converters or
interpreters. Remember that the input data has now been translated into
machine language. Now, how do we understand the data that the
processor had made?
Simple! Output devices have solved this problem!
Output devices convert the processed data back into human readable
form before returning it back to the user. Output may be in form of
characters such as letters, numbers, or symbols. Output may also be in the
form of graphical illustrations such as pictures, videos and such!
Everything we see on the monitor is considered an output! Why?
Because the monitor is an output device!
In general, an output device is any piece of computer hardware item
which utilizes whatever data and commands from your computer in order
to perform a task. This leads to the results of data processing carried out
by an information processing system (such as a computer) which converts
the electronically generated information into human-readable form.
Now, let us see some of the most commonly used output devices!
