CHARACTERISTICS,

CAPABILITIES, DISADVANTAGES
AND LIMITATION OF COMPUTER
(Week 7)

Objectives:
1. Discuss and explain the capabilities, limitations and
characteristics of computers;
2. State and explain the advantages/disadvantages and
applications of computer in the different fields;
CHARACTERISTICS OF COMPUTER
CHARACTERISTICS OF COMPUTER
1. SPEED -no human being can compete in solving the
complex computation, faster than computer.
2. ACCURACY -WYSIWYG

3. STORAGE -can store mass storage of data

Computer can work for hours without any
4. DILIGENCE - break and creating error.
5. VERSATILITY -We can use computer to perform completely
different type of work at the same time

6. POWER OF REMEMBERING -It can remember data for us

CAPABILITIES OF COMPUTER
CAPABILITIES OF COMPUTER

LIMITATIONS OF COMPUTER
LIMITATIONS OF COMPUTER

1. NO IQ OR NO SELF INTELLIGENCE
 -Computer does not work without instruction.
 - It works according to the instruction only.

2. NO FEELING
 -computer does not have emotions, knowledge, experience,
feeling

3. NO DECISION-MAKING POWER
 Computer cannot take any decision of its own. It does only those tasks which are already
instructed to it

4. NO LEARNING POWER
 Computer has no learning power. Once you give instructions to a computer how
to perform a task, the very task cannot be perform if you do not give it any
instructions for the next time
CLASSIFICATION OF
COMPUTERS
Computer can be classified according to:
1. Operating principles (based on their construction and
working)
2. Applications
3. Size and capability (or classification into micro, mini,
mainframe and supercomputers)
4. Number of Microprocessors
5. Word length
6. Number of users
A. Classification based on Operating Principles
 Based on the operating principles, computers can be classified into one of the
following types

A. Digital Computers
B. Analog Computers
C. Hybrid Computers
Digital Computers:
A digital computer is machine that stores data in a numerical format
and performs operations on that data using mathematical manipulation
Analog Computers:
An analog computer is a form of computer that uses the
continuously changeable aspects of physical phenomena
such as electrical, mechanical, orhydraulic quantities
to model the problem being solved.
Hybrid Computers:-
Hybrid computers are computers that exhibit features
of analog computers and digital computers. The digital
component normally serves as the controller and provides
logical and numerical operations, while the analog
component often serves as a solver of differential
equations and other mathematically complex problems.
Microcomputers (Personal Computer)

A microcomputer is a
complete computer on a small scale,
designed for use by one person at a time.

• A microcomputer is the smallest general

purpose processing system. The older pc
started 8 bit processor with speed of 3.7MB
and current pc 64 bit processor with
speed of 4.66 GB
MICROCOMPUTER CAN BE CLASSIFIED INTO 2
TYPES:

1. Desktops

2. Portables
The Five different portable computers
1. Laptop
• this computer is similar to a desktop computers but
the size is smaller. They are expensive than desktop.
The weight of laptop is around 3 to 5 kg
2. Netbook
is a small and inexpensive laptop designed
primarily as a means of accessing the Internet

3. Notebook
• These computers are as powerful as
desktop but size of these computers are
comparatively smaller than laptop and
desktop. They weigh 2 to 3 kg. They are
more costly than laptop
4. Palmtop (hand held)
 They are also called as personal Digital
Assistant (PDA).
• These computers are small in size.
• They can be held in hands such as Smart
Phones/Cellphones
5. Wearable computers
• It is capable of doing word processing,
spreadsheets and hand writing recognition, game
playing, faxing and paging, heart beat etc.

• It is used in the field of medicine. For example

pace maker to correct the heart beats. Insulin
meter to find the levels of insulin in the blood.
DISADVANTAGES OF COMPUTER
UNEMPLOYMENT
Different tasks are performed automatically by computers
It reduces the need of people and increases
unemployment in society
WASTAGE OF TIME AND ENERGY
Many people use computers without positive purpose.
They play games and chat for a long period of time

And it also has adverse effects on the social life.

Young generation is now spending more time on the social media

websites like Facebook, Twitter etc or texting their friends all night
through smartphones which is bad for both studies and their health.
DISADVANTAGES OF COMPUTER
DATA SECURITY
The data stored on a computer can be accessed by unauthorized
persons through networks.
It has created serious problems for the data security

COMPUTER CRIMES

They hack the credit card numbers of the people and misuse
them or they can steal important data from big organizations.
DISADVANTAGES OF COMPUTER
PRIVACY VIOLATION
• The computers are used to store personal data of the
people.
• The privacy of a person can be violated if the personal and
confidential records are not protected properly.
HEALTH RISKS
• The improper and prolonged use of computer can results in injuries or
disorders of hands, wrists, elbows, eyes, necks and back.

• The users can avoid health risks by using the computer in proper position.
• They must also take regular breaks while using the computer for longer
period of time.
• It is recommended to take a couple of minutes break after 30 minutes of
computer usage
DISADVANTAGES OF COMPUTER
IMPACT ON ENVIRONMENT
• The computer manufacturing processes and computer
waste are polluting the environment.
• The wasted parts of computer can release dangerous toxic materials

• Green computer is a method to reduce the electricity consumed and

environmental waste generated when using a computer.

• It includes recycling and regulating manufacturing processes.

• The used computers must be donated or disposed off properly.
