Laboratory 1

Introduction to MATLAB
MATLAB is a powerful software tool that can be used for a variety of purposes
including iterative analysis and design processes. MATLAB has its own programming
language that is designed to easily manipulate matrices and arrays.

For control engineers, MATLAB is particularly useful as it links to Simulink, a graphical

numeric simulation tool. MATLAB also has a number of add-on toolboxes (such as
the control design toolbox) that can make control tasks easier.

This tutorial is simply a training exercise to learn (or improve) the use of MATLAB.
Note that this lab is not assessed towards your grade, however, you will be expected
to be able to use MATLAB proficiently is later parts of the course and so this laboratory
is essential to complete.

Step 1:
Visit the web address https://www.mathworks.com/products/matlab-online.html and
press the button “Start using MATLAB Online”.

Step 2
You will be asked to log in to your Mathworks account. If you have already set this up
then enter the details, otherwise you will need to set up your account using the on
screen prompts. USE YOUR .strath.ac.uk EMAIL ADDRESS. This will ensure that
you have the licences available. Once logged in, you will be presented with screen
shown below. Note that MATLAB online uses the MATLAB servers to run the software
and so, as long as your PC can run a web browser, you should have sufficient
computing power.
Step 3
Click on the “Learn MATLAB” button highlighted in red above. You will be presented
with the screen shown below, though all the buttons will likely be blue in your case.
Click on the MATLAB Onramp button to get started.

Click to Run
MATLAB Onramp
The MATLAB Onramp application will launch.
Step 4
The Course lessons will be listed for you. Please complete up to and including lesson
10 “review problems”. Please also feel free to complete further lessons. The more
you use MATLAB and get used to it the easier later labs will be.
