ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I would like to express my special thanks of gratitude to my project
guide Dr Rehan Ali Shah, as well as our Chairman Dr Nadia Rasheed who
gave me the golden opportunity to do this wonderful project on the topic of
Voice Over Internet Protocol, which also helped me in doing a lot of research
and I came to know about so many new things I am really thankful to them.
Secondly, I would also like to thank my parents and friends who helped
me a lot in finalizing this project within the limited time frame.
Abstract
Introduction
What is VOIP?
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), also called IP telephony, is a method and group of
technologies for the delivery of communication & multimedia sessions over Internet
Protocol(IP) networks, i.e., Internet.
The terms Internet telephony, broadband telephony, and broadband phone
service specifically refer to the provisioning of communications services (voice, fax, SMS,
voice-messaging) over the Internet, rather than via the public switched telephone
network (PSTN), also known as plain old telephone service (POTS).
History of VOIP
In 1989, Cohen founded Vocal Tec Inc. He would later invent the audio transceiver that laid
the framework to make VoIP possible. Vocal Tec is hailed as the pioneer of VoIP after
launching the world's first VoIP commercial application in 1996.
VOIP Advantages
More affordable
Easily scalable
Greater flexibility
Easy to install
VOIP Disadvantages
Full reliance on the internet
Susceptible to cyber attacks
Not suitable for emergencies
VoIP works by converting voice audio packets of data that travel through the
Internet like any other type of data such as text or pictures. These packets of sound
data travel almost instantly through public and private Internet networks to route
from the origination to the destination.
Any landline or mobile phone that is connected to the Internet can place and
receive VoIP calls. VoIP calls can also be conducted on computers through the
computer microphone and speakers or headsets.
Because VoIP calls travel through the Internet instead of through analog telephone
lines, they are subject to the same lags and delays as other data travelling the
Internet when bandwidth is compromised or overwhelmed.
Work Methodology:
Our Requirement:
We need to deploy a VOIP network in Old Engineering. For this First we surveyed
the building. For this we need VOIP phones, distributed switch, switches, and routers.
First check how many phones are required, then how to connect them(using switches or
routers).
We have to make a schematic diagram for this(kind of blueprint).
Existing Network:
We have the following no of switches installed in our given building.
1 switch in the following rooms/ Lab
Power System Simulation Lab
Radar lab
Room 28
Room 29
Communication Lab
Comp Lab I
Comp Lab II
Comp Lab III
There is a Network Switch in Radar Lab that is specified for Wi-Fi networks & we have a
main switch in Comp Lab II as shown in Fig 1.0 & 2.0
Fig 1.0 Main Switch(Comp Lab II) Fig 2.0 Network Switch(Radar Lab)
There are number of D-Links too installed in Old Engineering, 40-50 PCs in Computer Labs
as well as in clerk office.
Ring Topology is used in Existing Network.
We have map of our assigned building. We can check where we add VoIP phones.

Updated Network:
For deployment of VoIP first we have to check how many phones and switches required
there. Which topology is best for this deployment?
