Nodal and Mesh

Analysis
EE 1: CIRCUITS 1
Nodal Analysis
Analyzing circuits using node voltages as circuit variables.
Steps to determine the node voltages:
1. Select a node as the reference node.
2. Assign voltages 𝑉1 , 𝑉2 ,…, 𝑉𝑛−1 to the remaining n-1 nodes. The voltages are referenced with
respect to the reference node.
3. Apply KCL to each of the n-1 reference nodes. Use Ohm’s law to express the branch currents
in terms of node voltages.
4. Solve the resulting simultaneous equations to obtain the unknown node voltages.

Example 1
Use nodal analysis to obtain 𝑣𝑜 in the circuit.
𝑖1 + 𝑖2 + 𝑖3 = 0
𝑣0 −12 𝑣0 𝑣0 −10
+ + =0
4 6 2

𝑣0 = 8.727 𝑉
Example 2
Find 𝑣𝑜 and 𝑖𝑜 in the circuit.

20−𝑣0 50−𝑣0 10−𝑣0 𝑣0

+ + =
1 2 2 4
𝑣0 = 20 𝑉
20−𝑣0 20−20
𝑖0 = =
1 1

𝑖0 = 0 𝐴
Example 3
Determine 𝑣1 , 𝑣2 , and the power dissipated in all resistors in the circuit.

@ node 1 Solving (1) and (2)

𝑣1 (𝑣1 − 𝑣2 ) 𝑣1 2
6= + 𝑣1 = 9.1429 𝑉 𝑃8𝛺 = = 10.4491 W
8 4 8
48 = 3𝑣1 − 2𝑣2 (1) 𝑣2 = −10.2857 𝑉 (𝑣1 −𝑣2 )2
@ node 2 𝑃4𝛺 = = 94.3676 W

4 2 2
40 = 𝑣1 − 3𝑣2 (2)
Mesh Analysis
1. Assign a mesh current (with variable name and assumed direction) to each mesh in the
circuit.
2. Write a KVL equation for every mesh with unknown current.
3. Solve the system of equations.
4. Solve the required quantities using the mesh currents.
Example 1

−2 = 56𝐼1 − 40𝐼2 (1)
25 = −40𝐼1 + 100𝐼2 (2)
𝐼1 = 0.2 𝐴
𝐼2 = 0.33 𝐴

𝑣𝑥 = 40(𝐼2 − 𝐼1 )
𝑣𝑥 = 40(0.33 − 0.2)
@ mesh 1
−2 𝑉 − 40 𝐼1 − 𝐼2 − 16𝐼1 = 0 𝑣𝑥 = 5.2 𝑉
@ mesh 2
5 𝑉 − 40𝐼2 − 40 𝐼2 − 𝐼1 − 20 𝐼2 − 𝐼3 = 0
@ mesh 3
𝐼3 = 1 𝐴
Example 2
Find the current 𝐼𝑥 using mesh analysis.

𝐼1 = 0.1304 𝐴
@ mesh 1
𝐼2 = −0. 3043 𝐴
7 𝑉 − 1 𝐼1 − 2 𝐼1 − 𝐼2 − 6𝑉 = 0
3𝐼1 − 2𝐼2 = 1 (1) 𝐼𝑥 = 𝐼1 − 𝐼2
@ mesh 2
−9 𝑉 + 6 𝑉 − 2 𝐼2 − 𝐼1 − 3𝐼2 − 4𝐼2 = 0 𝐼𝑥 = 0.4347 𝐴
−2𝐼1 + 9𝐼2 = −3 (2)
Example 3

𝐼1 = 4 𝑚𝐴 𝐼3 = 0.25 𝑚𝐴
@ mesh 2
𝐼2 = −2 𝑚𝐴 −6𝑘𝛺 𝐼3 + 3 𝑉 + 𝑉0 = 0
@ mesh 3 𝑉0 = −1.5 𝑉
