From NPR News, this is All Things Considered.
Every week this year, we’ve presented a selection from our list of the 100 most significant
American musical works of the 20th century.
Today, for our final program, we have a holiday classic: White Christmas.
It was written in 1940 by Irving Berlin, and it’s his most popular song.
Irving Berlin had a unique ability to write songs which sounded like they were already familiar
and not something new.
The lyrics, or words, in White Christmas come from basic traditions in American culture.
The song talks about snow, Christmas cards and bells.
This snowy holiday setting is something that feels familiar to people, and this is one reason
why people have always loved White Christmas, and why they still continue to love it today.
