EXERCISES FOR PRINCIPLES OF THERMODYNAMICS COURSE

Hands-on Session 2 – Energy and Energy Conversion

Exercise 1) Water is pumped from a lake to a storage

tank 15 m above at a rate of 70 L/s while consuming
15.4 kW of electric power. Disregarding any frictional
losses in the pipes and any changes in kinetic energy,
determine (a) the overall efficiency of the pump–motor
unit and (b) the pressure difference between the inlet
and the exit of the pump.

Exercise 2) Water is pumped from a lower reservoir to a

higher reservoir by a pump that provides 20 kW of shaft
power. The free surface of the upper reservoir is 45 m
higher than that of the lower reservoir. If the flow rate of
water is measured to be 0.03 𝑚3 /𝑠, determine mechanical
power that is converted to thermal energy during this
process due to frictional effects.
Exercise 3)
An oil pump is drawing 44 kW of electric power while
pumping oil with 𝜌 = 860 kg/𝑚3 at a rate of 0.1 𝑚3 /𝑠. The
inlet and outlet diameters of the pipe are 8 cm and 12 cm,
respectively. If the pressure rise of oil in the pump is
measured to be 500 kPa and the motor efficiency is 90
percent, determine the mechanical efficiency of the pump.

Exercise 4)
Water is being heated in a closed pan on top of a range while
being stirred by a paddle wheel. During the process, 30 kJ of
heat is transferred to the water, and 5 kJ of heat is lost to the
surrounding air. The paddle-wheel work amounts to 500 N ∙ m.
Determine the final energy of the system if its initial energy is
10 kJ.

Exercise 5)
The air in a circular cylinder is heated until the spring is compressed 50 mm. Find the work
done by the air on the frictionless piston. The spring is initially unstretched, as shown. Mass of
the piston is 50 kg and diameter of the piston is 10 cm.
