COMPUTER SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

Introduction to Computer Systems
TUTORIAL SHEET 1
UNIT 1

a) State and describe any four characteristics of a Computer.

b) The digital computers that are available nowadays vary in their sizes and types. The computers
are broadly classified into four categories namely Microcomputers, Minicomputers,
Mainframe computers, and Supercomputers. Identify the classes into which the following
devices fall.
i. Apple iPhone
ii. Samsung Galaxy Tablet
iii. Lenovo Laptop
iv. Dell OptiPlex Desktop
c) The history of computer development is often discussed with reference to different generations
of computing devices. There are five generations discussed in the course. Name the hardware
and software technologies associated with the first four generations in chronological order.
d) The fifth generation of computers uses Artificial Intelligence. Artificial Intelligence includes
areas like ________________________, ___________________________,
______________________________, __________________________ and Robotics.
e) What do the following acronyms stand for?
i. CMOS
ii. BIOS
iii. POST
iv. PCB
f) State and describe any five characteristics of Data and Information.
g) Computers can be applied in many areas like education, sports and advertising. Mention any
other area where computers can be applied that was discussed in class and list four ways in
which computers can be applied in that area.

UNIT 2

a) A computer consists of three main components—(1) Input/output (I/O) Unit, (2) Central
Processing Unit (CPU), and (3) Memory Unit. State 6 important registers that are found in
the Central Processing Unit and describe their functions.
b) A bus is a set of electronic signal pathways that allows information and signals to travel
between components inside or outside of a computer. Data Bus is used to transfer data
between I/O devices and CPU. What are the three most common bus technologies?
c) List four factors that must be considered when selecting a processor to buy.
d) There are a number of factors involved that are related to the CPU and have an effect on the
overall speed and performance of the computer. State any four such factors.

UNIT 3

a) Define the following terms:

i. Access Time
ii. Registers
b) PROM, EPROM, EEPROM are types of ROM

i. What do the above acronyms stand for?

ii. How are these types of memory different form ROM?

c) RAM is used for temporary storage of input data, output data and intermediate results. There
are two categories of RAM; Static RAM and dynamic RAM, clearly differentiate them by
giving four separate points.
d) Describe the steps or stages in the instruction cycle.
e) The computer memory stores different kinds of data like input data, output data, intermediate
results, etc., and the instructions. Binary digit or bit is the basic unit of memory. A bit is a single
binary digit, i.e., 0 or 1. How many bits make up the following:

i. 1MB _______________________________
ii. 1TB ________________________________
f) State any three features of internal memory and three features of external memory.
g) Clearly differentiate CD-ROM and DVD-ROM by giving four unique points.
