Tutorial Sheet-5 : Applications: Laplace Transformations Spring 2021-22

Solve the following problems by Laplace Transformations:

1. y 00 + 3y 0 + 2y = e−t ; y(0) = 0, y 0 (0) = 0.

2. y 00 + y = δ(t − a); y(0) = 0, y(b) = 0, 0 < a < b.

3. y 000 + 2y 00 − y 0 − 2y = 0; y(0) = 0, y 0 (0) = 0, and y 00 (0) = 6.

4. y iv − y = 1; y(0) = y 0 (0) = y 00 (0) = y 000 (0) = 0.

(
0, t ∈ [0, π),
5. y 00 + y = f (t); y(0) = 0, y 0 (0) = 0, where f (t) = and f (t +
sin t; t ∈ [π, 2π).
2π) = f (t).
(
1, t ∈ [0, π),
6. y 00 + 4y 0 + 5y = f (t); y(0) = 0, y 0 (0) = 0, where f (t) = and
−1; t ∈ [π, 2π),
f (t + 2π) = f (t).

7. y 00 + n2 y = a sin (nt + α); y(0) = 0, y 0 (0) = 0.

8. ty 00 + 2y 0 + ty = cos t; y(0) = 1, y 0 (0) = 0.

9. ty 00 + 4ty 0 + 4y = 8; y(0) = 2, y 0 (0) = c, where c is arbitrary parameter.

10. y 00 + 2y 0 + 5y = e−t sin t; y(0) = 0, y 0 (0) = 1.

13. A beam which is coincident with the x-axis is simply supported at its end x = 0 and
is clamped at the other end at x = l. Let a vertical load W act transversely on the
W
beam at x = l/4. The ODE for deflection at any point is given by y iv = EI δ(x−l/4),
where EI is the flexural rigidity of the beam. Find the deflection at any point. (Hint:
Since the beam is simply supported at x = 0, we have y(0) = y 00 (0) = 0. Also it is
given that the beam is clamped at x = l, which means that y(l) = y 0 (l) = 0.)

14. The coordinate (x, y) of a particle moving along a plane curve at any time t, is given
by y 0 + 2x = sin 2t, x0 − 2y = cos t; (t > 0). If at t = 0, x = l and y = 0, show by
Laplace transform that the particle move along the curve 4x2 + 4xy + 5y 2 = 4.
