ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the effectiveness of aroma therapy on the quality of
sleep and anxiety among elderly at selected old age homes in Pune city.
Design: Pre-experimental research design.
Sample: Old age peoples in selected old age homes of Pune city.
Measurements: The primary outcome was to assess quality of sleep and anxiety
among the elderly inmates in the old age homes after & before intervention. The
secondary outcome to determine the effectiveness of aroma therapy on the quality
of sleep and anxiety. We analyzed the association of the quality of sleep and
anxiety on selected demographic variable using modified self-quality of sleep and
anxiety scale.
Intervention: selected the subjects of mild and moderate anxiety and poor and
moderate sleep with inclusion criteria by modified Anxiety assessment Scale and
modified quality of sleep assessment scale. The Aroma therapy steam inhalation
(4ml of lavender oil mixed with 30ml of base oil [coconut oil]) was given to the
subject regularly 5 minutes duration on alternative days for 1 weeks to each group.
Results: Totally, for 60 samples, Researcher applied paired t-test for the
effectiveness of aroma therapy on the quality of sleep-in old age people. Average
quality of sleep score in pretest was 36.4 which reduced to 20.5 in posttest. T-value
for this test was 11 with 59 degrees of freedom. Quality of sleep score in posttest is
significantly less than that in pretest. Average anxiety score in pretest was 27.9
which reduced to 17.5 in posttest. T-value for this test was 11.6 with 59 degrees of
freedom. Anxiety score in posttest is significantly less than that in pretest.
It is evident that the aroma therapy is significantly effective in improving the
quality of sleep and reduces anxiety among elderly.
Conclusions: The aroma therapy effectively improved participants’ quality of sleep
and reduces anxiety among elderly.
