Telecommunication
Telecommunication refers to the transmission of information over distances for communication. This can
involve the exchange of voice, data, text, video, and images through various means like fiber optics, Fiber optics.
Popular telecommunication devices are telephones, internet, radio, and television etc.
Radio: Invented by Guglielmo Marconi in 1895, radio uses electromagnetic waves to transmit audio signals from
a transmitter to a receiver
TV: Invented by Philo Farnsworth and John Logie Baird in the 1920s, television transmits moving images and
sound from a broadcaster to a receiver.
Types of telecommunication:
There are two main types of telecommunication;
1. Wire line telecommunication 2. Wireless telecommunication
1. Wire line: Using Physical media like cables, Fiber optics PTCL etc.
Fiber Optics:
Fiber optics refer to the technology that uses thin strands of glass or plastic fibers to transmit data as light signals
over long distances.
High-Speed Transmission: Fiber optic cables can transmit data at very high speeds, much faster than
traditional copper cables. This makes them ideal for internet, television, and telephone services.
Components: A typical fiber optic system consists of a transmitter (to convert electrical signals into light
signals), the optical fiber (to carry the light), and a receiver (to convert the light signals back into electrical
signals).
Advantages: Fiber optics offer several advantages, including higher bandwidth, faster speeds, longer distance
signal transmission without loss of quality, and resistance to electromagnetic interference compared to traditional
metal cables.
Applications: Fiber optics are used in a variety of applications, including telecommunications, internet

Satellites: The GPS system consists of a constellation of at least 24 satellites orbiting the Earth. These satellites
continuously transmit signals that can be received by GPS receivers on the ground.
Functionality: GPS works by using the signals from these satellites to determine the exact position of a
receiver. The receiver calculates its distance from multiple satellites to triangulate its precise location (latitude,
longitude, and altitude).
