Writing
● A form of human communication by means of a set of visible marks that are related, by
convention, to some particular structural level of language.
● Writing renders language visible; while speech is ephemeral
● Form of communication shaped by:
○ Topic: What is the text about? What details are imparted?
○ Role: Who am I as a writer? Am I a sibling? A student? A customer?
○ Purpose: Why am I writing in the first place?
○ Audience: Who is reading the piece? What knowledge does the reader need to
understand?
Characteristics
○ Planned and focused: answers the question and demonstrates an understanding of
the subject.
○ Structured: is coherent, written in a logical order, and brings together related points
and material.
○ Evidenced: demonstrates knowledge of the subject area, supports opinions and
arguments with evidence, and is referenced accurately.
○ Formal in tone and style: uses appropriate language and tenses, and is clear, concise
and balanced.

o When hypothesis needs to be tested. (If we are not sure of what we are writing, do
not publish or submit.)
o Drawing conclusions or predictions from your finding that may generalize certain
