Part – A [80 Marks]
ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

Q1. a. Write down the limitations of the First Law and then explain Second law of [5]
Thermodynamics. What is PMM2?
b. What is Heat transfer? Write down all the modes of it with appropriate equations. Which [5]
mode of heat transfer is important in our daily life?

Q2. a. Find the expression of Air-Standard efficiency of Dual Combustion Cycle. [8]
b. Derive the expression of length for a cross-belt drive. [8]

Q3. a. Write down the types of Casting and its advantages? [4]
b. Write down the types of joining processes. Differences between homogeneous and [4]
heterogeneous welding
c. Discuss the different sources of energy. What do you understand by the Geothermal [4]
energy?
Q4. a. An engine with 200 mm cylinder diameter and 300 mm stroke works on theoretical
Diesel cycle. The initial pressure and temperature of air used are 1 bar and 27°C.
The cut-off is 8% of the stroke. Determine:
(i) Pressures and temperatures at all salient points. [8]
(ii) Theoretical air standard efficiency.
Assume that compression ratio is 15 and working fluid is air. Consider all conditions
to be ideal.
b. A shaft running at 200 rpm drives another shaft at 400 rpm, and transmits 7.5 kW [8]
through an open belt. The belt is 80 mm wide and 10 mm thick. The centre distance is 4
m. The smaller pulley is of 500 mm diameter, and the coefficient of friction between the
belt and pulley is 0.30. Calculate the Tensions and maximum stress in the belt.
Q5. a. A gas of mass I.S kg undergoes a quasi-static expansion which follows n relationship, p [7]
= a + bV, where a and b are constants. The initial and final pressures are 1000 kPa and
200 kPa respectively and the corresponding volumes are 0.20 ml and 1.20 ml. The
specific internal energy of the gas is given by the relation;

Page 1 of 3 Contd.
u = pv – 85 kJ/kg where p is in kPa and v is in m3/kg.
Calculate the net heat transfer and the maximum internal energy of the gas attained during
expansion.
b. A beam weighing 450 N is held in a horizontal position by three vertical wires, one attached to [7]
each end of the beam, one to the middle of its length. The outer wires are of brass of diameter
1.25 mm and the central wire is of steel of diameter 0.625 mm. If the beam is rigid and wires of
the same length and unstressed before the beam is attached, estimate the stresses induced in the
wires. Take Young’s modulus for brass as 86 GN/m2 and for steel 210 GN/m2

Q6. a. A bar of 20 mm diameter subjected to a pull of 50 kN. The measured extension on gauge [6]
length of 250 mm is 0.12 mm and change in diameter is 0.00375 mm.

Calculate: (i) Young’s modulus (ii) Poisson’s ratio and (iii) Bulk modulus.

b. The sun and planet gear of an epicyclic gear are shown in Fig,. The annular gear D has [6]
100 internal teeth, the sun gear A has 50 external teeth and planet gear B has 25 external
teeth. The gear B meshes with gear D and gear A. The gear B is carried on the arm E,
which rotates about the centre of annular gear D. If the gear D is fixed and arm rotates
at 20 r.p.m., then find the speeds of gears A and B.
