CHE-101: Energy Engineering

Tutorial Sheet-2

1. A super thermal power plant of 1100 MW capacity is run on coal having the following
ultimate analysis:

Moisture : 18.10 %
Ash : 7.72 %
Carbon : 55.30 %
Hydrogen : 3.21 %
Oxygen : 13.32 %
Nitrogen : 1.25 %
Sulphur : 1.10 %

The overall conversion efficiency of coal to electrical energy of the above plant may be taken as
44.56%. Determine the following.

i. The high and low heating values of the coal in MJ/kg

ii. Coal consumption in million tonnes per year if the plant runs for 310 days in a
year

2. A 250 MW thermal power plant is consuming coal having the following proximate analysis:

Moisture : 13.13 %
Ash : 7.62 %
Fixed carbon : 45.87 %
Volatile matter : 33.38 %

Determine the following:

(i). Heating value of the coal, if empirical constant, a = 199 – 3 x (Volatile Matter),
(ii). Annual coal consumption in tonnes, if the plant is running for 75% time in a year with an
overall efficiency of 42.97%.

3. A sample of finely ground coal of mass 2.7212 g was placed in a crucible of 10.1643 g in an
oven and maintained at 105 oC for about 1 hr. The sample was then removed, cooled in a
desiccator and reweighed. This procedure was repeated until a constant total mass of 12.4773 g
was attained. Now this crucible was again heated with a lid in a furnace at 920 oC for 7 minutes.
On cooling and reweighing, the total mass was noted as 11.7153 g. A new sample weighing
1.8728 g was placed in an alumina crucible of 15.8734 g weight without a lid in the furnace
maintained at 815 oC until a constant total mass of 16.0396 g was obtained. Determine the
proximate analysis on “as received” and “dry ash” free basis.
