I. Background of the study

Extracurricular Activities play a vital position in paving the way towards

the most certain, most cheerful attainable future for all schoolchildren, mainly

these in high school. Extracurricular matters to do provide a way for students

to actively use their free time to enhance their authentically and acquire

treasure competencies that can aid them drastically when it comes to college

and job applications. (Swain, 2023)

Extracurricular Activities is a range of activities organized outside of the

regular school day, curriculum or course intended to meet learners’ interests.

(Colombo, 2023)

They furnish opportunities to increase new abilities and pastimes out of

doors of the classroom. Participating extracurricular things to do can

additional help students construct. Some famous extracurricular matters to

consist of sports activities team, tune groups, volunteer organizations, and

tutorial clubs. It is also improve for students to stumble on things to do that

they revel in and are passionate about, as this will make the ride more

fulfilling. (Milner, 2020)

According to the International Institute for Educational Planning

(UNESCO, 2017) Extracurricular activities constitute “A vary of matters to do

equipped outside of the everyday faculty day, curriculum or route intended to

meet learners’ interest. These matters to do can help inexperienced persons

come to be more involved in their college or regional and can aid them to

enhance social and gentle capabilities and to promote photography, drama,

music, and etc. In some countries, this is additionally referred to as ‘co-

curricular activities”.
2

Bearing in thought that extracurricular things to do have an amazing

and impact on personality improvement in particular areas of existence

(through imparting moral compass, contributing to emotional maturity,

intellectual development, elevating the consciousness of the significance of

social responsibility), academic establishments and the instructor themselves

strive to encourage students to suppose about the doable things to do that

would replicate their abilities and interest. (Shaffer, 2019)

A unusual clarification of the which skill of the term extracurricular

things to do (ECA) (often additionally co-curricular matters to do (CCA),

increase tutorial (EAA), after school activities, extracurricular activities) is that

refers to students’ more personality and crew activities that take vicinity

outdoor the everyday school or college curriculum , which via ordinary

practicing, helps the college students to beautify one-of-a-kind elements of

their personalities, from social talent to concrete skills that can, but do no

longer have to be associated to faculty activities. (Colonies, 2023)

Although there is a giant differ of definitions that describe

extracurricular activities, researchers are going to list two by means of the use

of relevant sources, companies and authors, to furnish a higher appreciation

into what this time duration refers to, precisely.

Extracurricular activities have been found to have a positive impact on

academic performances. According to a study conducted by National Center

for Education Statistics (2012), students who participated in extracurricular

activities have higher GPAs and are more likely to graduate high school. The

study also found that participation in extracurricular activities can improve

3

attendance and reduce dropout rates. It also expounded by another study

publish in Journal of Youth Adolescence.

In recent years, there has been growing interest in examining the

relationship between extracurricular activities and academic success among

students. Such activities are aimed at providing students with growth,

development of skills, and socialization outside of the classroom setting. Many

individuals believe that participating actively in extracurricular activities can be

beneficial to students’ academic achievements. Hence, others claim that

extracurricular activities may have a negative impact and potentially distract

students from their academic pursuits.

Over the years, studies have been conducted to determine the

relationship between extracurricular activities and academic success. In a

study conducted by Gyimah and Tuffour (2021) in Ghana, it was found that

students who were involved in extracurricular activities demonstrated better

academic performance compared to their non-participating peers.

However, not all studies on the subject support the idea that

extracurricular activities positively impact academic success. In a study

conducted by Tsend- Ayush and colleagues (2020) In Mongolia, it was found

that students who participated extracurricular activities experienced lower

academic performance than their peers not involved in activities.

The relationship between extracurricular activities and academic

success is a complex one and may vary based on cultural, social, and

economic factors. As educators and policymakers continue to encourage

student engagement in extracurricular activities, it is crucial to examine the

role these activities play in academic success.

4

The things mentioned above are also present in Libertad National High

School. With various of extracurricular activities every month, may it be

sports, community services, school publication, clubs, academe, and

leadership school organizations, that may and will affect the academic

performances and success of Libertad National High School Students.

2. Significance of the Study

The importance of examining the relationship between extracurricular

activities and academic success cannot be overstated. With an ever-growing

emphasis on the value of a well-rounded education, the impact of

6

extracurricular activities on student’s academic performance has become a

topic of great interest among educators, parents, and researchers alike.

Numerous studies have shown that students who participate in

extracurricular activities tend to have higher grade point averages, better

attendance records, and a greater likelihood of completing high school.

Furthermore, students who are involve in extracurricular activities report

greater satisfaction with their school experience, more positive attitudes

towards learning, and fewer instances of problem behavior.

However, it is important to acknowledge that the relationship between

extracurricular activities and academic success is not always straightforward.

While some activities may have a clear positive impact on academic

performance, others may not be as beneficial. Additionally, the correlation

between participation in extracurricular academic activities and academic,

success may be influence by a variety of demographic and socio-economic

factors.

By examining the relationship between extracurricular activities and

academic success we can gain a better understanding of the specific ways in

which participation in these activities can impact student educational

outcomes. This information can help educators and parents make informed

decisions about the types of extracurricular activities in which students should

be encourage to participated into the larger educational experience.

Ultimately, our study aims to shed light on a crucial aspect of the

academic and social development of young people. By highlighting the ways

in which extracurricular activities can contribute to academic success, we can

7

promote an educational culture that values a variety of learning experiences,

and that is dedicated to helping students achieve their fullest potential

3. Research Methodology

A. Research Design

The researcher utilized the quantitative method in gathering information

about the General Average of Grade 12 Linnaeus from 1st semester to 2nd

semester. The researcher attempted to get the answers to the

aforementioned problem and to justify and satisfy the goals of this study.

Likewise, it also facilitate discussions with a group of research subjects to

gain valuable research insight from the respondents.

Quantitative research is a systematic investigation of

phenomena by gathering quantifiable data and performing statistical,

mathematical, or computational techniques. Quantitative research collects

information from existing and potential customers using sampling methods

and methods and sending out online surveys, online polls, and

questionnaires, for example.

One of the main characteristics of this type of research is that

the results can be depicted in numerical form. After a careful understanding of

these numbers, it’s possible to predict the future of a product or service and

make changes accordingly.

An example of quantitative research is the survey conducted to

understand how long a doctor takes to tend to a patient when the patient

walks into the hospital. A patient satisfaction survey can be administrative to

8

ask questions like how long a doctors takes to see a patient, how often a

patient walks into a hospital, and other such questions.

Quantitative outcome research is mostly conducted in the social

sciences using the statistical method used above to collect quantitative data

from the research study. In this research method, researchers and

statisticians deploy mathematical framework and theories that pertain to the

quantity under question. The results achieved from this research method are

logical, statistical, and unbiased. Data collection happened using a structured

method and was conducted on larger samples representing the entire

population.

A quantitative research is an inquiry into a social or human problem,

and analyzed with statistical procedures, in order to determine whether the

predictive generalizations of the theory hold true. Hence, research gathers

participants’ experiences, perceptions and behave (Tenny. et.al., 2022)

B. Respondent

In this study the researchers choose the respondents from Grade 12

Linnaeus. Whereas it consisting of thirty (30) students as respondents of this

survey. All respondents were students from the said grade level. The

respondents were selected randomly to ensure unbiased result. Each

respondent was given a questionnaire to answer.

The questionnaire consisted of both open-ended questions. The

respondents were assured of anonymity and confidentiality of their responses.

The data gathered from the respondents were used to analyze and draw

conclusions for the research. Considering their situation, the Grade 12

9

Linnaeus of Libertad National High School is the best option to conduct the

research with.

As they have various extracurricular activities and lot of students who

participated on extracurricular activities. Therefore, Grade 12 Linnaeus of

Libertad National High School is the best choice of respondents to get data’s

for valuable insights in this study.

C. Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers provided a letter to for approval to Mrs. Marcia Arnejo

to conduct a study at LINHS, Grade 12 Linnaeus. After given permission, the

researchers will explain the purpose of the study to the selected respondents

and make sure each participants corresponds to predefined criteria. The study

will be conducted for ten (10) minutes with thirty (30) respondents.

After the collection of data, the researchers tabulated, tallied and

analyzed the survey. The result is the bases in determining the relationship

between extracurricular activities and academics success.

First, researchers identified the population of students from a particular

academic institution. The respondents size determined based on the

statistical calculations to ensure that it is both and representative of the

student’s body and statistically significant.

Next, they administered a structured questionnaire to collect data from

the selected students. The questionnaire contained questions relating to their

involvement in extracurricular activities, their academic performance

indicators, and other relevant demographic information.

10

After collecting the data, researchers used statistical analysis

techniques to identify any correlations between extracurricular activity

participation and academic success. We also compare the results across

different demographic groups to evaluate if there are any differences in the

relationship between extracurricular activities and academic success.

This data gathering procedure helped us to retort our research

questions, examine the relationship between extracurricular activities and

academic success, and provide valuable insights to academic institution on

how they can support and activity participation among their students.

Research locale; The researcher conducted at Libertad National High School,

Grade 12 Linnaeus. The researchers choose this place in conducting the

study as where there are a lot of extracurricular activities.

Therefore, LINHS, Grade 12 Linnaeus is the perfect location for the

survey because the researchers will be able to get plentitude if significant

information that are needed for the study.

Our research locale is a set at Libertad National High School- Senior

High School Department and involves thirty participants from a specific

section. LINHS is a public institution providing secondary education to

students in Libertad, Misamis Oriental, Philippines.

The Senior High School department has been established to cater to

students who have completed their junior high school education and are now

pursuing tertiary education. The department offers various academic tracks

such as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), BM

(Accountancy, Business, and Management), HUMMS (Humanities and Social

11

Sciences), TVL (Technical-Vocational Livelihood), EIM (Electrical Installation

and Maintenance), and GAS (General Academic Strand).

The thirty respondents who participated on our research came from a

particular section within the Senior High School department. They were

selected based on specific criteria relevant to the research study, and their

consent participate in the research has been obtained.

As researchers, it is important that we ensure the confidentially and

privacy of the participants are respected throughout the research process. We

adhered to ethical guidelines and principles, especially when collecting and

analyzing data.

Therefore, the Libertad National High School Department is an

appropriate research locale, as it provided relevant and suitable participants

for our research study,

Research instruments; The instruments used in the study is a survey

method specifically in a form of questionnaires construction during the

conduct of the study. The survey questionnaires were created using suitable

questions and preferences of the respondents. The survey questionnaire is

researcher-made questionnaire.

This study utilized a survey method, which is a popular research tool

used to collect data from a sample of individuals. The survey was design to

gather information on the participants’ attitude, beliefs, and behaviors

regarding the research topic.

The survey consisted of a set of standardized questions, chosen based

on the research objectives and hypothesis. These questions were validated to

12

ensure reliability and validity. The survey instrument was administrative via

face-to-face.

To ensure the representativeness of the sample, the research

instrument was given to two groups of students: those who participated

extracurricular activities and those who did not participate. Respondents were

selected from a certain section at Libertad National High School Department.

The respondent size for the survey was determined using a power analysis to

ensure adequate precision and significance levels.

The survey method was chosen for its effectiveness in collecting large

amounts of data in a relatively short amount of time. It is also allowed for

greater generalizability of the findings to the population of interest.

D. Statistical Treatment
Statistical analysis is essential to determine the results of the data that

have been collected.

In this regard, the researchers used the mean, median, mode, range

and quartile in analysing the data being collected. The process of generate

mean, median, mode, range and quartile distribution involves identifying the

total number observations to be presented and counting the total number of

observations within each data point.

The organization of data is equally important so that appropriate

conclusions can be drawn (Siddharta Kalla, 2009)

In our statistical analysis, we employed various measure to gain a

deeper understanding of our data set. The researchers utilized mean, median,

mode, range and quartiles to uncover insights that would not be immediately

apparent to the casual observer.

13

The mean, also known as the arithmetic average, provide a measure of

central tendency by summing all values in a sample and dividing by the total

number of values. This can be a useful tool for understanding the typical value

within a data set.

The median, on the other hand, represents the middle value in a set of

data when arranged in order. This measure of central tendency can be more

robust than the mean if significant outliers or extreme values are present.

The mode represents the most frequent value or values within a

dataset. This measure provides insight into the most common occurrences

within the data.

The range is a measure of dispersion and is calculated by subtracting

the minimum value from the maximum value in a data set. This measure can

be useful for assessing the variability within a data set

Lastly, we employed to divide the data set into four equal parts. A

quartile is a statistical term that describes a division of observations into 4

defined intervals primarily based on the values of the information and how

they evaluate to the whole set of observations.

Overall, by utilizing these measures, we were able to gain a more

comprehensive understanding of our data set, identify potential outliers, and

draw meaningful conclusions from our research.

5. Conclusion and Recommendation

After conducting the study on examining the relationship between

extracurricular activities and academic success, the researchers can conclude

that there is a significant positive correlation between the two variables. The

data collected suggests that students who participate in extracurricular

activities tend to have higher GPAs, better attendance records, and a higher

likelihood of pursuing higher education.

These findings have important implications for educators,

administrators, and parents alike. Encouraging students to participate in

extracurricular activities not only promotes a well-rounded education, but it

may also enhance academic success. As such, researchers recommend that

schools and communities invest in providing a diverse range of extracurricular

opportunities that reflect their students' interests and abilities.
