Linear equations in 2 variables(Revision)

Linear Equation in One Variable:

The equation with one variable in it is known as a Linear Equation in One
Variable.
The general form is ax + b = 0, where a, b and s are real numbers and a ≠ 0.
Note:
The maximum number of solutions for linear equations in 2 variables is 1.
Linear Equation in Two Variables:
An equation with two variables is known as a Linear Equation in Two
Variables. The general form of the linear equation in two variables is ax + by
+c=0
where a and b are coefficients and c is the constant. a ≠ 0 and b ≠ 0.
Note:
1. The number of solutions of linear equations in 2 variables if one equation
will give: infinite
2. The number of solutions of linear equations in 2 variables if two equations
will give: one or infinite or no solution (we will learn this concept in
grade 10)

Solution of a Linear Equation

• There is only one solution in the linear equation in one variable but there
are infinitely many solutions in the linear equation in two variables.
• As there are two variables, the solution will be in the form of an ordered
pair, i.e. (x, y).
• The pair which satisfies the equation is the solution of that particular
equation.

Example:
Find the solution for the equation 9x + y = 9.

Solution:
To calculate the solution of the given equation we will take x = 1

9(1) + y = 9
y=9–9=0

Hence, one solution is (1, 0).

To find another solution we will take y = 9

9x + 9 = 9

x=0

So another solution is (0, 9).

Example:
If (5, 4) is solution of a linear equation 2x + my = 30, then find m value.

Solution:
Given equation: 2x + my = 30

Substitute x = 5, y = 4 in given equation.

2(5) + m(4) = 30

10 + 4m = 30

4m = 30 – 10 = 20

m = 20/4 = 5

Example:
Check (-3, 4) is solution of 3x – 4y = 6

Solution:
Given equation: 3x – 4y = 6

Substitute x = -3, y = 4 in given equation.

LHS:

3x - 4y = 3(-3) – 4(4)

= -9 -16

= -25 ≠ 6 (RHS)

Therefore, (-3, 4) is not a solution.

Forming Linear equation:

1. The cost of a pen is twice the cost of a pencil. Write a linear equation in
two variables to represent this statement.

Solution:

Let the cost of a pen = ₹ x

Let the cost of a pencil = ₹ y

According to the question,

The cost of a pen = Twice the cost of a pencil.

The cost of a pen = 2 x cost of a pencil.

x = 2×y

x = 2y

x - 2y = 0

2. The sum of father’s age and twice of son’s age is 74, Write a linear
equation in two variables to represent this statement.

Solution:

Let the father’s age = ₹ x

Let the son’s age = ₹ y

According to the question,

Father’s age + 2 x son’s age = 74

x + 2y = 74.
