Reading
1 Read the article about four young people and their jobs.

Aiming for the top

A
As a child, I would always know if someone was not telling the truth! I’ve always had a fascination with what is
right and what is wrong, even as a young child. I think things should be fair, and I like to know that I can make a
difference in people’s lives. Some family members used to say to me that I would never achieve my goals to
become a lawyer, as it takes so much time, money and effort to pass all of the exams. I just thought to myself,
‘You mustn’t listen to them!’ And, here I am! To me, the money isn’t as important as the law itself, but I guess it
does help that my new job is very well paid!

B
I love snowboarding with my family and have done for as long as I can remember. My father is very athletic
and so I think he is my biggest influence. We like to go snowboarding together whenever we can as it gives
you the sensation of being free with nature. I love the risk involved when doing jumps and tricks – the feeling
you get is just so exciting. My love for this sport makes me very motivated and determined to succeed, and
although I get to do what I love, as a job it can get a bit stressful: you have to remain calm and give a perfect
performance at every competition. I’m working towards the next Winter Olympics for now – the feeling of
having a medal put around your neck is just the best, and I would be incredibly proud to represent my country.

C
My parents taught me that I should always be the best and aim for the top. For this reason, I’ve been thinking
about my future lately – and that’s why I’m starting my own business as soon as I’ve finished school. I’ve
already got my plans finalised and I even have funding. I’m pretty sure having my own business will increase
my wealth quickly! I also know that my learning won’t stop once I’ve finished my studies, as there will be so
much to learn whilst I experience the world of work. I might make mistakes, but I’ll learn from my experiences.
Nevertheless,
I know that I must maintain my drive and ambition to achieve the success I dream for.

D
I go to a drama school, where I work on my acting skills and learn how to present myself. I also frequently go to
film auditions and have done ever since I was small. You often have to improvise in many auditions, which I
ought to find enjoyable, but it is very difficult. Although I’m not always successful at the auditions, I am able to
overcome these failures.
I’ve even had the chance to appear in a few well-known films. My father says he loves seeing my face up on
the big screen in the cinema! He always tells his friends about me. I even get to go to big events with lots of
famous people, just because of my job. I am often given designer clothes and expensive jewellery to wear to
them – I’m living my dream!
