CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE/SYSTEMS

Library Management Systems (LibraryMS) are essential tools for educational institutions
to efficiently organize and manage their library resources. This review examines the current
literature, studies, and systems relevant to LibraryMS.

Literature

(Uzwyshyn, R., Balnaves, E., Boffy, F. X., Chakarova, J., Kleinveldt, L., Sánchez
Nogales, E., ... & IFLA Information Technology Standing Committee, 2022). “For this issue, we
have a wide spectrum of great articles on AI topics for libraries. Juja Chakarova, of the
International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, gives a historical overview of AI in the context of
libraries. Lynn Kleinveldt, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, South Africa, overviews
new AI learning environments and libraries. Elena Sánchez Nogales, Alicia Pastrana García,
José Carlos Cerdán Medina, of the National Library of Spain, present a project regarding Digital
Transformation, Data Reuse and AI at the National Library of Spain. Marcelo Lorca González,
from the Library at the National Congress of Chile, details a project on the conversion of MARC
to BIBFRAME and implications towards semantic web-linking. From Greece’s International
Hellenic and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Datascouting, Afrodite Malliari, Ilias Nitsos,
Sofia Zapounidou, Stavros Doropoulos overview an AI-based Open Audio-Visual Archives
(OAVA) project for enhanced search and retrieval. And from the University of Sheffield, UK,
Andrew Cox forwards a compelling set of ethics scenarios regarding artificial intelligence and
the importance of examining ethical implications of AI for information professionals.”

(Fems, S. S., Kennedy, Z. O., Deinbofa, G., & Godwin, O. O., 2019) “Libraries have
been a fundamental fragment of educational and information sector of any university. The
success of any library largely depends on proper management. Several libraries, including the
Niger Delta University library, have suffered catastrophe as a consequence of insufficient
administration and weaknesses in handling delicate information as regards members of the
library, difficulty in storage space restraint, searching for, and finding desired books, availability
of library and library materials at all times etc. It is therefore the purpose of this study to design
and develop a digital library system (DLS) for the Niger Delta University, which digitalizes and
answers difficulties confronted by the traditional library and support in positioning the library to
meet its incessant increasing demands.”

(Jamwal, R., & Singh, N., 2019) “Academic libraries are the knowledge hubs with
tremendous amount of big data stored in large number of books that can be used for the
development purposes to support teaching, learning, research, innovation, community outreach
and partnerships. Library automation incorporates the adoption of integrated library systems. e-
granthalaya is an Integrated Library Management Software from National Informatics
Centre(NIC), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India
developed by a team of experts from software as well as Library and Information Science
discipline for implementation in Colleges and university levels. It is beneficial for automation of
in-house activities of libraries and to provide various online member services. Ver.4.0 ('Cloud
Ready Application') is the latest version of e-granthalaya and provides a Web-based data entry
solution in enterprise mode with a centralized database for cluster of libraries.”

(Amannah, C. I., & Ojekudo, N., 2021) “IT has quickened the space of creation, storage,
update, access and distribution of information in contemporary societies, be it developed or
developing society. Nigeria as a developing society has a great need for its sources of
information, namely, the library. This paper was designed to qualitatively outline the retooling
essentials for the automation of libraries in the contemporary society of Nigeria. The paper
identified two major essentials for retooling libraries in Nigeria; the Integrated Library System
(ILS) and the open Source Library System (OSP).”

(Rathee, S., & Kaushik, S., 2019) “With the impact of technologies, the format of
information is changing rapidly. To use the collection effectively, it is very essential that it should
be well managed and organized whether it is traditional library or digital library. The project
should be with a plan. Without planning, any project may fail at any stage. This study briefly
introduces the Digital Library and Repositories creation. The planning steps are discussed for
setting up digital libraries and repositories. The authors highlight the need, purpose and user
community, selection of source material, requirements and features of digital library collection,
plan approach to digitalization, source requirements, implementation schedule and timeline.”

(Zainal, B. A., 2019) “Library Management System (LMS) is considered as an advanced

way to collect, organize, and process the essential data from library which relates to the
borrowing, returning and reservation of a book, our purpose was to develop an LMS for the
central library of Cihan University-Erbil in order to solve the issues of the traditional way of
managing the library that they use, because it is very slow when it comes to issuing and
reissuing of books and prone to errors all of the time, and by using Visual basic.net tool the
researcher builds the suggested system.”

(Araya, T. W., & Mengsteab, A., 2020) “Presently, the transaction of books in the
Asmara Community College of Education (ACCE) library has been prepared manually in most
cases, thereby taking more time for a transaction like borrowing of books, returning books,
searching for books, and adding new members. Series of difficulties have been occurring in the
physical library because of this inefficient use in library management. Mostly human error
happens in keeping records, like some manually written files loss and damaged due to
inefficiency use.”

Study
(Khan, S. A., & Shahzad, K. 2024) "In most university libraries in Pakistan, free and
open-source software (FOSS) has been implemented, with DSpace emerging as the most
widely utilized software among library professionals. Key features of digital library software
highlighted in the study include a user-friendly interface, customization options, reliability and
security measures, adherence to metadata standards such as Dublin Core, web-based
accessibility, advanced search functionalities, provision of consultancy and technical support,
compatibility for sharing e-books across various devices, robust full-text searching capabilities,
utilization of Boolean operators, and effective access control mechanisms."

(Afaf Abu Sirhan, Khalid Mohamad Abdrabbo, Serhan Ahmed Ali Al Tawalbeh, Mustafa
Hamdi Ahmed, & Mohammad Ali Helalat, 2019) The aim of this study is to “illustrate some
methods to protect digital libraries using digital rights management (DRM) technologies and
specifically the methods applied at the digital libraries of Jordan universities.” Findings reveal
that the “Majority of the universities in Jordan use different methods of protection including
coding, identification, authenticity and digital watermark. However, methods including digital
signature, digital fingerprint, copy detection systems and pay system have not been employed
within Jordanian universities. The use of copyright management systems has been limited,
which shows the weakness in the use of technological protection within the investigated
libraries.”

(Abdul Rahim Abdul Rahman, & Suhana Mohezar, 2020) The aim of this study is to
“identify the factors affecting continued use of digital libraries in a military context.” Findings
reveal that “Using semi-structured interviews, this study presents five dimensions of critical
success factors generated from the analysis of the content of the qualitative data. The
dimensions highlighted are as follows: perceived quality factors; perceived instrumental support;
perceived ease of use; users’ expectation and users’ satisfaction; and net benefits and
perceived usefulness.”

(Nur Ahammad, 2019) ”This paper aims to explain the implementation procedure of
DSpace at the Library of Independent University, Bangladesh. This paper shows how DSpace is
promoting open educational resources (OER) movement and demonstrates the ease of
implementing DSpace in an institution. Moreover, the purpose of this paper is to encourage
library professionals to participate in the OER movement by implementing DSpace in their
libraries.” Findings reveal that “open source software and Open Access Institutional Repository
software has a fundamental role in promoting OER. DSpace is perfect for building a DL or an
institutional repository in libraries, especially for developing country libraries because this
demands low cost and it is easy to implement in libraries as well as is user-friendly.”

(Muhammad Khalid Anser, Mosab I. Tabash, Abdelmohsen A. Nassani, Abdullah

Mohammed Aldakhil, Zahid Yousaf, 2023) “This study aims to investigate the role of e-service
quality and e-trust for achieving e-loyalty among digital library users in the digital economy. The
current study examined the mediation effect of e-trust in the connection between e-service
quality and e-loyalty.” Results reveal that “e-service quality positively predicts e-trust in digital
economy. Moreover, in digital economy e-trust predicts the e-loyalty. The findings also reveal
that e-trust mediates the relationship between e-service quality and e-loyalty links.”
(Heydar Esmaeili, Alireza Isfandyari-Moghaddam, Mehdi Alipour Hafezi, 2022) This
paper aims to “draw a roadmap for the presence of Iranian academic libraries in the cloud
infrastructure.” The value is — “By introducing a roadmap for the presence of academic digital
libraries in the cloud context, they will promote more and better interaction between academic
libraries to offer services to users anytime and anywhere.”

(Muhammad Kabir Khan, Arslan Sheikh, 2023) "This study explores the current
utilization of open-source institutional repository (IR) software in university libraries across
Islamabad. It investigates librarians' perspectives, satisfaction levels, and challenges regarding
the adoption and implementation of IR software. Findings reveal that out of 23 Higher Education
Commission (HEC)-recognized universities in Islamabad, 17 (both public and private) have
developed IRs. While some libraries have fully implemented IRs, many are in the process of
doing so. Open-source software is predominantly favored over in-house, locally developed, or
commercial alternatives. Librarians generally exhibit a positive attitude towards IR software
usage. However, challenges such as selecting suitable software and digitization materials,
insufficient support from the parent organization, limited training opportunities, and a shortage of
skilled staff are commonly encountered."
