IGNITED WORLD WAR 1

SERBIAN NATIONALISM
On 28 June 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the throne of
Austria-Hungary, was shot and killed by a Serbian man who thought
Serbia should control Bosnia instead of Austria.
Born into a Bosnian Serb peasant family, Princip was trained in terrorism by the
Serbian secret society known as the Black Hand. Wanting to destroy Austro-Hungarian
rule in the Balkans and to unite the South Slav peoples into a federal nation, he
believed that the first step must be the assassination of a member of the Habsburg imperial
family or a high official of the government. As the car carrying the
Archduke of Austria-Hungary and his wife passed, Princip remained
intrepid and shot both of them dead.
OUTRAGE
Franz Ferdinand was beloved by his
people, his death baffled the entirety of
Europe. I believe , even if the
assassination attempt failed. A war was
bound to break out. Timid relations in
Europe arose discomfort, and as the
power of wester Europe continued to
augment. Germany and Austria-Hungary
felt the need to preserve their standing
on a global stage. European conquest in
Africa was nothing but successful, hence
why European nations built alliances to
have a sense of security. The death of
Allied power
the archduke was nothing but a mere
excuse to engulf Europe in war Central
therefore dragging the preposterous
powers
patchwork of alliances into it.
AN ALLIANCE VIEWED DICHOTOMOUSLY
In the age of imperialism prior to World War I,
countries throughout Europe had created
alliances. The alliances promised that each
country would support the other if war ever broke
out between an ally and another Great Power. The
alliance, between France, Britain and Russia,
formed in 1907 and called the Triple Entente,
caused the most friction among nations. Germany
felt that this alliance surrounding them was a
threat to their power and existence. As tensions
continued to rise over alliances, the preexisting
alliances fed into other countries declaring war
against one another in the face of conflict. The 2
sides fighting in the war were called the Allied
and Central Powers. By the start of the war, Italy Painting depicting the moment Gavirlo
and the United States entered on the side of the Princip shot the archduke Of Austria-
Hungary
Allied Powers, which consisted of Russia, France
and Great Britain. The Central Powers,
alternately, consisted of Germany, Austria-
Hungary, the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria.
