Part I: NOW YOU GO!
NOW YOU WON’T!
Materials:
Radio controlled car or radio set or WIFI router and its corresponding remote
control (both with new batteries) and its antenna
Cotton (such as a piece of clothing made from cotton
Aluminum foil (any material made of aluminum)
Wax paper
Rubber glove (any material made of rubber)
Paper
Plastic wrap
A smooth, wide open space to test drive your radio-controlled car/radio set or
WIFI router
Procedure:
1. Wrap the antenna of the RC car and of the receiver or any of the materials
available in your house with the first material you want to test, using several
layers so that they are completely and securely covered.
2. Attempt to operate the RC car using the remote control or use the other
materials available (radio set or WIFI router). Does it work?
3. Use a stopwatch to time your test drive over a set distance if you are using a
RC car. If you are using radio set or WIFI router observe if it is functioning.
4. Repeat steps 1 to 3 using other materials. Make sure to maintain the distance
between the RC car and the remote control. Collect data in a table similar to the
table below. Write the collected data in your answer sheet.

Inside an RC Truck
A closer look inside this RC truck
Inside the car, you will find a circuit board with several capacitors, resistors and
diodes, as well as the IC that controls the motors. The radio receiver consists of
a crystal that oscillates at a specific frequency, inductors and an antenna.
The electric motors receive power from the batteries. The flow of the power is
regulated by the IC
9
Aluminum foil and other electrically conductive materials like copper can
reflect/absorb the radio waves and consequently interferes with their transmission.
Thin plastic wrap, wax paper, cotton and rubber are not likely to interfere with radio
waves.

RADIO WAVES
Radio waves have the longest wavelength in the electromagnetic spectrum. They
are produced by making electrons vibrate in an antenna. They are used to transmit
sound and picture information over long distances.
Radio waves have a very wide range of wavelengths. The whole region of the
radio waves is divided into smaller regions or wavebands. Each waveband is allocated
by law to a specific radio service.

Why is it that cellular phones loses its signal when inside a tunnel or a garage?
12
Motor – this is responsible for turning the wheel
Power source – this refers to batteries.
Radio waves – EM wave with the longest wavelength. They are used to transmit sound
and picture information over long distances.
Receiver – an antenna and circuit board inside the toy. It receives signal from the
transmitter and activates motors inside the toy as commanded by the
transmitter.
Remote Control – a control of a machine or apparatus from a distance by means of
signals transmitted from a radio or electronic device
RC car – Radio Controlled cars – are miniature models of cars that can be controlled
from a distance using a specialized transmitter or remote.
Transmitter – set of equipment used to generate and transmit EM waves carrying
messages or signals (radio waves) to control a toy
