Tutorial Sheet: 7
Topics covered: Differentiation of vectors, gradient, directional derivative, divergence, curl, and Line integrals.

1. Find the directional derivative of the given scalar functions at the given points in the indicated directions.
(a) f (x, y, z) = xyz at (1, 4, 3) in the direction of the line from (1, 2, 3) to (1, −1, −3).
(b) f (x, y, z) = x2 + y 2 + 2z 2 at (1, 1, 2) in the direction of grad(f ).

2. If the maximum value of the directional derivative of a scalar field ϕ = ax2 y + by 2 z + cz 2 x at the point
x−1 y−3 z
(1, 1, 1) is in the direction parallel to the line = = and has magnitude 15, then find the
2 −2 1
values of the parameters a, b, and c.

3. Find the angle between the two surfaces at the indicated point of intersection.
(a) z = x2 + y 2 and z = 2x2 − 3y 2 at (2, 1, 5).
(b) x2 + y 2 + z 2 = 9 and z + 3 = x2 + y 2 at (−2, 1, 2).

4. Show that the following vector fields are irrotational and hence find their scalar potentials.
(a) f(x, y, z) = cos(x2 + y 2 + z 2 )(xi + yj + zk).
(b) f(x, y, z) = 3x2 y 2 z 4 i + 2x3 yz 4 j + 4x3 y 2 z 3 k.

5. Show that the following vector fields f are solenoidal.

(a) (2x + 3y)i + (x−y)j−(x + y + z)k.
(b) ex+y−2z (i + j + k).

6. Prove the following identities:

(a) curl(f v) = (grad f ) × v + curl v.
∂2 ∂2 ∂2
(b) div(gradf ) = ∇2 f , where ∇2 ≡ + + is the Laplacian operator.
∂x2 ∂y 2 ∂z 2
(c) curl(curl v) = ∇ (∇ · v) − ∇2 v.

7. Find the area of one side of the wall standing orthogonally on the curve y = x2 , 0 ≤ x ≤ 2, and beneath

the curve on the surface f (x, y) = x + y.

8. Find the mass of a wire that has (linear) density ρ = ρ0 (1 + z) and is in the shape of the curve

r(t) = (t cos t)i + (t sin t)j + (2 2/3)t3/2 k, 0 ≤ t ≤ 1.

9. Find the work done by the force F = xi + yj − zk in moving a particle from the origin (0, 0, 0) to the
point (2π, 0, 2π) along the conic-helical curve: r(t) = (t cos t)i + (t sin t)j + tk with t between 0 and 2π.

10. Find the circulation of the vector field F = 2xi + 2yj + 2zk around the closed path consisting of the
following three curves traversed in the direction of increasing t:

C1 : r(t) = cos ti + sin tj + tk, 0 ≤ t ≤ π/2.

C2 : r(t) = j + (π/2)(1 − t)k, 0 ≤ t ≤ 1.
C3 : r(t) = ti + (1 − t)j, 0 ≤ t ≤ 1.
