Writing task 2: Mindset 12

In many countries around the world, life expectancy is increasing.

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this situation and give your opinion.
Write at least 250 words.

With the evolution in technologies and medicine, it has become increasingly common
for countries’ population to grow and have higher levels of life expectancy. While there are
several reasons to assume that this situation has both advantageous and disadvantageous
sides, I hold the opinion that the rise in human lifespan is a negative development.
The proponents of the idea think that longevity, have beneficial impacts on the
economics. Higher life expectancy of one’s life affects the labour market, as it means that
people will work longer, contributing to the economic system of the country. An additional
point to consider is that this can indirectly imply that country had significant advancements in
medicine and technology. There are all the reasons to claim that rise in life expectancy is an
advantage.
On the other hand, the disadvantages pose numerous negative impacts on the
governmental budget. Rising life expectancy leads to growth in numbers of retired people. In
this case, the problem will put immense pressure on state treasury to provide old people with
pensions. Moreover, as the number of elderly people increase, the ratio between younger
population rises, which hints that country will lose efficient workforce in the country. Thus, I
think that even though longevity has some beneficial sides, its drawbacks outweigh the
advantages.
In conclusion, while longer life expectancy can bring economic benefits and
essential developments in medicine, the negative implications cannot be overlooked. The rise
in senior population puts immense pressure on government and workforce numbers, leading
to several problems. Therefore, it is essential to weigh these consequences to create more
sustainable solutions to this problem.
