What is a sentence?

Sentence-is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. It


begins with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark.

A complete sentence- has a subject and a predicate that express


complete thought.

All the words in a subject form the complete subject, and all the
words in a predicate form the complete predicate.

1. You and I are learning about sentences.

Complete Subject Complete Predicate

Subject- is the naming part. A subject tells who or what the


sentence is all about.

The complete subject has:

noun/ pronoun/ noun phrase

Example:

1. Ricky plays football.

noun (Ricky is the subject)

2. We are going to the beach on Sunday.

pronoun (We is the subject)


3. My brother’s name is Clinton.

noun phrase (My brother’s name is the subject)

The subject does something, or is, or has something.

Example:

1. Vernil is making his ALS recycled flower project.

making (action does something)

A sentence may also have an object. The object of a sentence


comes after the verb in the predicate. In a sentence, the subject is
the person or a thing that does the action. In the same sentence, the
object is a person or a thing that receives the action of the subject.

Example:

1. The ALS teacher teach her learners’ how to write an essay.

The object answers the question:


What? or Whom?

Predicate- is the telling part. A predicate talk more about the
subject.

The complete predicate has:

verb/ verb phrase + all the words after the verb

Example:

1. The fisherman leaves home at 5:00pm.

2. The frontliner is wearing a PPE as a protection


against COVID-19 virus.
