Q.1 A distillation column with two feeds is separating ethanol from water.

The first feed

is 60 wt % ethanol, has a total flow rate of 1000 kg/h, and is a mix of liquid and vapor
at 81°C. The second feed is 10 wt % ethanol, has a total flow rate of 500 kg/h, and is
liquid at 20°C. We desire a bottom product that is 0.01 wt % ethanol and a distillate
product that is 85 wt % ethanol. The column operates at 1 kg/cm 2 and is adiabatic. The
column has a partial reboiler, which acts as an equilibrium contact, and a total
condenser. The distillate and reflux are saturated liquids. Find B and D in kg/h, and find
Qc and QR in kcal/h. Use data in Figure 2-4 enthalpy composition diagram from the
book and do both;

a) External reflux ratio, Lo /D = 3.0

b) Boilup ratio, 𝑉̅/𝐵 = 2.5.

Solution:
Q.2 A mixture of acetone and ethanol (acetone is more volatile) is fed to an enriching column that
has a liquid side stream withdrawn. The feed flow rate is 100.0 mol/min. Feed is 60.0 mol%
acetone and is a saturated vapor. The liquid side product is withdrawn from the second stage
below the total condenser at a flow rate of S = 15.0 mol/min. The reflux is returned as a saturated
liquid. The distillate should be 90.0 mol% acetone. The external reflux ratio is L/D = 7/2. Column
pressure is 1.0 atm. Column is adiabatic and CMO is valid.
Find the mole fraction of acetone in the side stream xS, the mole fraction of acetone in the
bottoms xB, and the number of equilibrium stages required.

Equilibrium data for acetone and ethanol at 1 atm is

Solution:
Q.3 A mixture of 40 mole per cent benzene with toluene is distilled in a column to give a product
of 95 mole per cent benzene and a waste of 5 mole per cent benzene, using a reflux ratio of 4.

(a) Calculate by Sorel’s method the composition on the second plate from the top.
(b) Using the McCabe and Thiele method, determine the number of plates required and the
position of the feed if supplied to the column as liquid at the boiling point.
Solution:
Q.4 A mixture of benzene and toluene containing 40 mole percent benzene is to be separated to
give a product containing 90 mole percent benzene at the top, and a bottom product containing
not more than 10 mole percent benzene. The feed enters the column at its boiling point, and the
vapor leaving the column which is condensed but not cooled, provides reflux and product. It is
proposed to operate the unit with a reflux ratio of 3 kmol/kmol product. It is required to find the
number of theoretical plates needed and the position of entry for the feed by using McCabe and
Thiele method.
