A Level C teaching and research academic is expected to develop curriculum, teach and/or
undertake research and/or other scholarly work relevant to the development of their discipline or
professional field. An academic at this level will make a significant contribution to the discipline at
the national level. They will normally play a major role or provide a significant degree of leadership
in scholarly, research and/or professional activities relevant to the profession.
Position Context
The College of Science, Health and Engineering is comprised of 9 Schools and sixteen Departments
with 1,000 staff and 16,000 students, including 900 PhD students across La Trobe’s multi-campus
operations. The College offers a range of general and specialist undergraduate and postgraduate
courses that are rigorous and attuned to meeting the needs of students in ensuring their readiness
to work in changing environments. The College has an outstanding reputation for research
excellence, for research translation and for building strong relationships with industry partners.
The School of Allied Health, Human Services and Sport, is the largest education and training provider
of its kind in Australia and comprises the disciplines of Physiotherapy, Speech Pathology, Audiology,
Occupational Therapy, Podiatry, Prosthetics and Orthotics, Dietetics and Human Nutrition,
Orthoptics, Social Work, and Sport and Exercise Science (including Sports Analytics and Sports
Coaching and Development). These disciplines are organised into four departments:
Department of Physiotherapy, Podiatry, and Prosthetics and Orthotics;
Department of Dietetics, Human Nutrition and Sport;
Department of Occupational Therapy, Social Work & Social Policy;
Department of Speech Pathology, Orthoptics and Audiology;
The School of Allied Health, Human Services and Sport also includes three research centres, as well
as an emerging area of research in chronic disease rehabilitation. Established centres include:
La Trobe Sport and Exercise Medicine Research Centre (LASEM),
Living with Disability Research Centre (LiDS),
Centre for Aphasia Recovery and Rehabilitation Research
The School currently provides education for more than 4,000 students at entry to practice and
higher degree levels. The School has revenue of approximately $70M and employs approximately
160 continuing and fixed term staff.
The Physiotherapy Discipline is responsible for a number of courses including the: Bachelor of
Applied Science and Master of Physiotherapy Practice (double degree), Bachelor of Physiotherapy
(Honours) starting in 2021, graduate entry Master of Physiotherapy Practice, Graduate Certificate in
Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, Graduate Certificate in Sports Physiotherapy, Master of
Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, Master of Sports Physiotherapy, as well as the Doctor of
Physiotherapy (Professional Doctorate). There are currently about 1,000 students enrolled across the
courses. The Physiotherapy Discipline has as a proud history of excellence in teaching, research and
professional service both within Australia and internationally. Our alumni include internationally
renowned leaders in research and academia. Given the depth of expertise in teaching pedagogy and
curriculum development, a number of staff also undertake work related to the scholarship of
teaching. This position will make a significant contribution to the research activities of the Discipline,
as well as the teaching within the Physiotherapy courses at the Melbourne (Bundoora) campus;
which may include responsibility for managing the clinical placement subjects. The successful
applicant will also contribute to the administrative functions of the discipline.
Design, coordinate and teach subjects and courses which provide a high quality learning
experience that engages undergraduate, honours and postgraduate students.
Design innovative and effective curriculum which reflects developing best practice nationally
and internationally, utilising various methodologies including online and blended learning.
Contribute to La Trobe’s Scholarship of Teaching (SoLT) and disciplinary teaching pedagogy
and research.
Provide leadership and mentoring to others in subject or course level curriculum design and
development and delivery of teaching.
Conduct and lead innovative and high impact research and produce conference and seminar
papers and publications resulting from that research.
Contribute to building a robust and ambitious research culture within La Trobe.
Play a significant role in research projects including leadership of research teams and/or
management of projects.
Supervise Higher Degree by Research (HDR), honours and postgraduate students.
Obtain necessary research funding from contracts/grants/consultancies.
Contribute to knowledge and knowledge transfer, at a local and/or nationally significant level.
Represent discipline/program or school at external events.
Attend to effective and efficient performance of allocated leadership and administrative
functions primarily connected with the position.
Maintain professional practice skills/knowledge and expertise at state/nationally recognised level.
Undertake other duties commensurate with the classification and scope of the position as
required by the Head of Department or Head of School.
