Reading: The Runaway Bride
Pre-reading:
1. The text is called “The Runaway Bride”. What can we guess (infer) the story is about based on the title?
_______________________________________________________________________________________
2. The Runaway Bride is set in Messina, Sicily. Which country is Sicily part of?

Adapted version of The Runaway Bride

2. Like a Victorian watercolour painting, my Uncle Ivan’s villa sat on a cliff overlooking the beach. The
guard let me through a gate in a high stone wall. On the other side of the wall, the garden was exactly
like what I had seen in old family photographs, big and beautiful with flowers and trees stretching all
the way to the beach, and the sparkling blue and mysterious sea beyond.
3.The guard carried my gigantic suitcase to the spectacular white villa, with me following behind him,
feeling embarrassed at how heavy my case was. When the doors to the villa opened, it was like
stepping into a Mediterranean heaven. Inside the villa, the walls were covered in fancy blue tiles, hand-
painted by an artist. I could see the calm ocean through the floor-to-ceiling windows, and the smell of
the salty sea drifted in from outside. When I finally met them, Ivan’s wife hugged me tightly to her
chest, but Uncle Ivan was cold and distant, and looked like he was inspecting me. Their two young
children raced among aunts, uncles, cousins, and curious neighbours who stared at me and whispered
in each other’s ears.
4.Uncle Ivan and his wife were dressed in their finest black silk. There was a spark of excitement in the
air as though there would be a big event that day. Under the strict orders of my uncle, maids hurried
about, placing jewelry on me, having me try on dresses, and making me feel uncomfortable. “Can you
please dress for the occasion?” I was asked. We were leaving soon for a restaurant, and I was to be the
VIP. I was tired from travelling and unprepared for all the excitement, but I did as I was asked.
5. My family and a large group of their friends were seated at a long table at the restaurant. The table
was filled with more seafood than I have ever seen before. I was told politely but firmly to try every
dish. Soon I was full to bursting and was shocked to find out that that was only the first course of seven!
I tried to take smaller bites each time, but the many aunts made sure that as soon as I stopped chewing
one piece of food, another was waiting. Repeatedly, I seemed to be compared to my mother’s mother.
At least I thought that as the aunts pinched my cheeks while saying my grandmother’s name and
heaping more food on the plate in front of me.
6.When we got back to the villa, I asked to be excused so I could take a nap, much to my family’s
disappointment. A maid walked me up the stairs to my room and pointed out the window to a nearby
villa. The villa was newly built in the same style as Uncle Ivan’s. She said that I would live there one day,
and I thought she was just confused.
Just as I was about to fall asleep, another maid hurried into the room, holding a long, white dress in
7.
her arms like a baby. I said, “Aah! It’s very beautiful” which seemed to make the maid happy.

14
8.The next few days I spent meeting relatives and friends, being dressed in expensive clothes and being
fed far too much food. I thought that my family was just trying to be nice, but it was all too much for
me. I was exhausted, so I made my apologies and told them that I had to end my vacation early. Back
home in America, I found out from my cousins that me leaving suddenly had caused a big family fight. I
had missed an important wedding they said. The villa pointed out by the maid had been built for the
bridal couple. The groom was a young, handsome, Italian doctor from my uncle’s university and a
longtime family friend. And the bride? It was to have been MY wedding! My Italian relatives had
arranged a marriage for me, following their traditions.
9.Now, years later, I often wonder who the groom was. If I hadn’t packed my bags so quickly, if I hadn’t
jumped back on a plane, if I had said yes to marrying a man I didn’t know, would we have lived happily
ever after?

Reading: Patagonia
Adapted version of extract A: “Lady Florence Dixie”

1. After another day’s stay at the campsite, we continued our journey. We knew that we would have to
take along all the food and water and wood we would need to survive, because there would be
nothing in the barren area we were now going to enter.
2. Leaving the woods behind us we rode our horses up onto a plain. Far, far away I saw a little black
cloud. Later I would realise that it was not a cloud at all, but a peak of the Cordilleras mountains. I
knew we would camp at the foot of those mountains, but my heart sank when I thought of the long,
cold, painful journey we would have to make for the next few days before we got there.
(A few days later…)
3. This day’s ride, and it was a long one, was by far more boring and depressing than any of the other
days. The giant plateau over which we travelled for six or seven hours was gloomy and empty and
lifeless. There was no sun, and the sky was cloudy and dark above the dry plain. The land was so flat
that I thought it would never end; grey, grieving and silent.
4. We were all affected by the death-like nature around us and even the guides looked depressed and
tired. I have never felt so low in my life.

Adapted version of extract B: “Argentina – by Florian von der Fecht”

1. Nature is the main character in Patagonia, one of Argentina’s most impressive areas. Its beauty is
rugged, rough and wild. Many people have tried to take this land, to make it their own, but none have
succeeded. Patagonia remains free.
2. There are some brave people who live here. They are hard people who do not break. Some of them
live in the valleys, and they have to survive without water. Other people live close to the sea, but here
there is no food and the winter kills. And the wind… the wind is always there, ready to destroy.
3. “Why then can’t I stop thinking about Patagonia?” Darwin wondered. “And not only me, but
everyone who comes here. I believe it may be because this land opens our imagination to new
possibilities”.

5. Refer to paragraph 1. Find and copy an example of alliteration.

Reading: Instant Weekend Palma

Read the adapted article of the text on TB pages 152-153 and answer the questions which follow.

Instant weekend: Palma

1. There’s more to the Mallorcan capital than playing on the beach - such as fine eating, galleries and
hotels, writes Chris West.
2. Why should I go? This year, 9 million people will fly to Mallorca. The good news is that 8,999,998 of
them will head straight for the beaches, leaving you free to enjoy the museums, galleries, restaurants
and fancy hotels.
3. What do I do? A walk along the waterfront gives you the best view of La Seu Cathedral - a central
landmark, with the old city spreading out around it. Built in the French-Gothic style, it’s huge, with an
altarpiece and giant candlesticks by Gaudi. Es Baluard museum, home to modern photography and
paintings (www.esbaluard.org), is pretty spectacular to look at, too – it is in a fixed-up 16th century
building. It has an excellent restaurant, Es Robost d’Es Baluard, serving new Mallorcan dishes (9 Place
Porta de Santa Catalina; 00 34971 719609; 24 pounds per person). But if you’re like me and want
luxury souvenirs, head to Jaume III, one of the main shopping districts. From there, go south, for the
modern Spanish giants Zara and Massimo Dutti, as well as interesting little boutiques.
4. Where should I eat? Go straight to La Boveda, a noisy and authentic tapas bar on Carrer Boteria
(971714863). For those looking for a hidden gem, there’s Bar Espana, at the corner of Carrer del Bane
and Calle de Can Escursac, farther up the hill into the old town (no telephone - and go early, they stop
serving tapas at 10pm). Mallorca is the place where your diet starts tomorrow.
5. Where do I stay? If you’re into posing in rooftop pools and flopping on fancy day beds, try the Puro
Hotel (www.purohotel.com; doubles from 156 pounds). It’s a converted monastery building in the old
town, with a spiritual vibe.
6. How do I get there? There are flights to Palma from 22 UK airports. Airlines include Jet2 (0871 226
1737, www.jet2.com), bmibaby (0871 224 0224, www.bmibaby.com), easyJet (www.easyjet.com) and
Monarch (0870 040 5040, www.flymonarch.com). AerLingus (0818365000, www.aerlingus.com) flies
from Dublin.
7. Chris West traveled as a guest of the Spanish Tourist Office (020 7486 8077, www.tourspain.es).
