Example-1:
Standard Penetration Test (SPT) N values with depth is shown in Figure 1.b. Calculate the corrected SPT
N values for energy ratio (Er) of 60%. Assume hammer efficiency (ηH) is 67%, bore hole diameter
correction (ηB) is 1.0, and rod length correction (ηR) is 0.75 from 0 to 4 m and 0.85 from 4 to 6 m.
Assume that standard sampler was used in the test. Assume that the soil is granular.
ηH = 60%
ηB = 1
ηS = 1
ηR = 0.75 0-4 m
0.85 4-6 m
0.95 6-10 m
1 >10 m

Problem 3.19 & 3.20:-
In a deposit of normally consolidated dry sand, a cone penetration test was conducted.
Assuming the dry unit weight of sand to be 16 kN/m3, estimate the average peak friction angle,
φ', of the sand. Using Eq. (3.51), determine the variation of the relative density, Dr with depth.
Use Qc =1. Following are the results:
Qc =1
Pa =100 kPa
