arithmetic to measure the passing of time, to applying differential equations to describe the
evolution of systems.
My interest lies in how advances in pure mathematics drive forward theoretical physics,
leading to a better understanding of the behaviours and relationships between all objects in
the universe. Discovering the connections between mathematics and physics is my favourite
part of studying these subjects.
I have taken several initiatives to further my understanding of these subjects. During the
2020 lockdown, I enrolled for a Calculus MOOC by Khan Academy to give myself a head start
in the A-Level Mathematics Syllabus. From the introduction of limits to the derivation of the
quotient rule, I enjoyed the process of discovering new techniques and their proofs. The
course also covered super-curricular topics, including the Mean-Value Theorem, Riemann
Sums and Arc Lengths. Of these, my favourite topic was Maclaurin series. I was fascinated
by the idea that non-polynomial functions could be identical to an infinite sum of
polynomials, particularly given how elementary some of the sums were. Further research
led me to a derivation of Euler's Formula and Euler's Identity using Maclaurin Series, one of
the many examples of how different concepts in mathematics can converge to form
something completely unexpected and beautiful.
I also came across Euler's Formula in physics whilst studying wave equations. Deducing the
equation for simple harmonic motion by modelling oscillations as a one-dimensional
projection of circular motion intrigued me, and further research allowed me to derive the
sinusoidal wave equation as a function of both displacement and time. I subsequently came
across the complex exponential form of this equation, which I could now understand due to
my knowledge of Euler's Formula, demonstrating the surprising ways mathematics and
physics can overlap. I also completed a MOOC on Special Relativity by Stanford University.
Einstein's derivation of the theory based on just two simple postulates was remarkable,
leading to concepts that seem completely counterintuitive, such as the relativity of
simultaneity. Deriving the mathematics behind these concepts myself, such as Time Dilation,
Length Contraction and "Leading Clocks Lag", was essential in solidifying my understanding
of this subject.
Outside of my academic work, I have an avid interest in sport and have represented my
school in both Rugby and Athletics regularly for several years, strengthening my teamwork
and communication skills. I am a keen musician, and have achieved Grade 5 Miruthangam.
This led me to participate in many concerts celebrating traditional festivals, improving my
confidence as a musician, and enabling me to have a stronger appreciation of my culture.
I also contribute to my school as part of the Sai School Charity team. We raise money for
pupils in India by organising events such as sports tournaments and essay competitions. I
volunteer at my local charity shop every week, which has allowed me to meet new people
and contribute back to society.
Studying the connections within and between mathematics and physics at the next
academic level is a challenge I am looking forward to at university.
